You see it happen again and again. There are two teams left in the playoffs. The third and fourth seeds have already been separated from the rest of the pack. In the final game of the season, the two teams will meet. They are all knotted up at the end of the game, and the teams are in a neck-and-neck race. Each team is now trying to pull out a win and advance, and the game is just as crucial to both teams as it was in Week One.

As the Indianapolis Colts rebounded from a disappointing first half of the season, they needed their defense to step up. And for most of the season, they’ve done just that. However, that streak of consistency was ended on Sunday, when the Colts gave up a huge lead to the Cincinnati Bengals, in a game that they would go on to lose.

The Chicago Bears and the Cincinnati Bengals were in the middle of a heated rivalry this past week, and it was just a regular week of smack talk between two teams. The Cincinnati Reds, being the Reds, fired back after a Bears player went after the Bengals’ QB Andy Dalton for asking a question about the future of Ohio State freshman QB Justin Fields.. Justin Fields has wowed fans since his first foot onto an NFL practice field, leading many to believe he’ll be taking over for Andy Dalton as the Chicago Bears’ starting quarterback soon.

After all, the Bears acquired Fields in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and Dalton is just under contract for the next season. Fields should be put on the field as soon as he’s ready, according to general reasoning.

Outside of Dalton, everyone in the Bears’ locker room probably agrees with this logic.

When discussing about Justin Fields and the Bears’ QB1 position, Andy Dalton made some questionable remarks.

When asked about his position with the Bears this season, Dalton attempted to be polite in his response. Despite this, his real emotions about the event bled through.

He came to Chicago to be their starting quarterback, and despite the acquisition of Fields during the draft, he doesn’t believe that has changed.

This predicament goes back to the Bears’ lack of a clear quarterback strategy earlier in the summer. There was no assurance they’d get Fields come draft night, so they needed to hedge their bets.

Dalton was coming off an injury-plagued 2020 with the Dallas Cowboys, but his nine-year stint with the Cincinnati Bengals has clearly given him enough quarterback starting experience. The Bears were in urgent need of a starting quarterback, and Dalton was searching for a new job; it was a great fit.

Most Bears supporters were not overjoyed with the prospect of Dalton taking over as their starting quarterback in 2021, but that was the team’s plan before to the selection.

The Bears’ locker room may be split between Andy Dalton and Justin Fields.

The 2021 Draft proved to be a lifeline for the Bears’ front staff, as Fields fell out of the top-10, enabling the team to move up a few places and acquire their future franchise quarterback. Fields seems to be a long-term starter in the NFL after only one preseason game.

Because Fields is developing quicker than the Bears had anticipated, the decision to replace Dalton with their first-round pick is a simple one. However, if Dalton opposes the notion (as he indicated during his press conference), the Bears risk creating a schism in the locker room.

Players who have spent the summer working out with Dalton may prefer him, while rookies and newly acquired talent may prefer Fields. This isn’t a position the Bears want to be in, particularly at this point of Fields’ growth.

The Bears must make a clear choice as soon as possible.

Regardless of when the Bears make their ultimate choice to name Fields the starter, whether it’s before Week 1 or later in the season, they must be adamant about it.

Fields, not Dalton, is the future.

If any veterans or pro-Dalton players disagree, the Bears should be prepared to trade them in order to keep the locker room unified behind their rookie quarterback.

As the season approaches, Dalton may be able to relax and embrace his position as Fields’ mentor. In the meanwhile, the Bears must proceed with caution, avoiding a schism.
