The 2018-19 NBA season began with a bang, as the Los Angeles Lakers did not have to wait long until they were back in action. The team has been on a turbulent journey towards establishing themselves as an elite force again heading into this year, but it will take more than just one trade of LeBron James for them to make it happen.

Anthony Davis has had a tough time in the playoffs this season. He’s been playing with an injury that has caused him to miss some games. If he can show aggression of past seasons, then he could make the championship leap for the Lakers. Read more in detail here: anthony davis injury history games missed.

Anthony Davis Must Turn Back the Clock and Showcase Aggression of Past Seasons for Lakers to Make the Championship Leap

Since joining the Los Angeles Lakers, Anthony Davis has established himself as the franchise’s focal point, dictating the team’s NBA championship hopes. Davis has battled to remain on the floor since the Lakers won the NBA title in 2020, and he hasn’t produced at the same level. All of this suggests that the star big man has to make a significant shift.

Anthony Davis is dealing with another ailment.

Davis came into the 2021-22 season aiming to put his health problems behind him.

The 28-year-old altered his offseason exercise plan, but it hasn’t stopped the injury bug from rearing its ugly head once again. Davis will be out for at least a month due to an MCL injury in his left knee, putting the Lakers in yet another difficult situation.

It could be time for a serious self-evaluation as he makes his way back to the court.

For the Lakers to make the championship jump, Anthony Davis must turn back the clock and demonstrate the same level of tenacity as in previous seasons.

Davis’ lack of sustained offensive aggression has been a popular complaint among Lakers supporters.

Behind his ball-handling talent, outside shooting touch, and low-post skill, he boasts a unique skill. However, his indecisiveness in using the whole package at times perplexes fans and basketball watchers alike.

Davis hasn’t played like the guy who garnered unshakable reputation as one of the league’s finest two-way players since his debut season with the Lakers. Instead, it seems that his injuries have taken a greater toll on him than he is letting on publicly.

As he’s grown more dependent on his outside shooting, his play speaks for itself. This season, he led the NBA in scoring in the paint at one point, but his lack of consistency has enraged fans.

It doesn’t help his cause that he hasn’t been able to find his outside touch, shooting a career-low 17.9% from 3-point range. His 16.7% through the first 20 games, according to StatMuse, was the lowest in league history for players averaging at least two attempts per game. Meanwhile, according to Basketball-Reference, he’s only making 35.4 percent of his jump attempts, including 32.4 percent from 10 to 16 feet out.

Davis is a complete player on both sides of the floor, but he doesn’t seem to inspire the same terror in his opponents as he did in the past.

Davis has shown flashes of similar form this season, most notably in a late-November comeback victory against the Detroit Pistons. The 28-year-old is a powerful physical presence who can alter the course of a game.

The Lakers want to see the dominating player who developed into one of the league’s greatest, not the one who only shows his dominance in flashes.

The Lakers need Anthony Davis to be in top form.

As impressive as LeBron James’ performance has been in his 19th season, the Lakers will need much more to challenge for an NBA championship.

Davis is the most important jigsaw piece since he is the anchor on both ends of the floor. When he’s healthy, he’s an outstanding rim protector and a high-end scorer. Obviously, there are other jigsaw parts to be put in place (on-court camaraderie, lineup rotations, balanced scoring, and better defense), but the big man’s performance is at the top of the list.

The expectation is that Davis will feel physically comfortable enough to play with the proper aggressive mentality after spending so much time away. Time will tell, but if the Lakers want to win their 18th title, their star big man must play a major role.
