Bill Belichick loves to keep a low profile. He’s often talked about in hushed tones, even when he wasn’t actually on the job. But just this week, Belichick was caught on tape taking exception with New England Patriot Rob Gronkowski.
At the end of the NFL 2017 season, Rob Gronkowski sat out the Patriots’ Super Bowl celebrations and media events due to his recovery from back surgery. Following the Super Bowl, the Patriots started their offseason workout program with media obligations, but Gronkowski was reportedly absent from the first few days of workouts due to his back injury. When asked about Gronkowski’s absence, head coach Bill Belichick was reported to have responded “I don’t know. I have no idea”, and when asked whether he would have reacted the same way if he were Gronkowski, he responded “I might have reacted the same way”.
Bill Belichick has always had a complicated relationship with New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. In fact, it’s such an interesting one that several reports have claimed Belichick “gifted” Gronk a Super Bowl ring last year after the tight end exercised his right to have the ring awarded in his name as a reward for his nine-year career with the team.. On that day, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots will welcome Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski back to Gillette Stadium.
Emotions were already running high, both in the stands and on the sidelines. But now Gronkowski may have more reason to play the ball outside the lines against his former team.
When Gronkowski played his last game for the Patriots in February 2019, it was natural to think that no player in franchise history would ever wear his number 87 again. In reality, the Patriots probably would have taken the song out of circulation until the official ceremony to erase it.
That may be true in most cities, but not in Foxborough, Massachusetts. During the Patriots’ seasonal workouts, receiver Devin Ross wore No. 87 during mini-camp.
Ross, who has been on the Patriots’ practice squad and training camp roster for the past few years, recently moved to No. 8. But he and midfielder Ja’Whaun Bentley wear that number.
As of June 2021, the Patriots have not yet released Brady’s number 12.

Unless their relationship has completely broken down, the Patriots will likely honor Gronkowski again sometime after his retirement. He would be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame, and no other player in franchise history would ever wear the number 87 again.
Yes, Belichick consistently embraces the principle of business over emotion, and that includes the numbers. Why else would quarterback Mac Jones wear jersey number 50 in training camp?
But if you’re Gronkowski, it must be very unpleasant. Without Gronkowski at tight end, the Patriots will not win three Super Bowls in the 2010s, even with all of his injuries. If you are patriotic, it is good manners not to use the numbers 12 and 87 for the official ceremony. Players like Brady and Gronkowski deserve more respect after the October clash.
The New York Yankees even have no. 13 Alex Rodriguez not sent to spring training since he left the team in the middle of the 2013 season. Similarly, when Hakeem Nicks wanted to wear #88 for the Colts in 2014, the team refused – and they are stillwithout Marvin Harrison’s #.
We know it’s off season and there are only a few numbers. But Belichick should know better, and Gronkowski should feel even more motivated to score a few touchdowns in October’sSunday Night Football.
It seems likely that the day will come when the Patriots retire #12 Brady and #87 Gronkowski. Brady is almost certain to win this honor, and Gronkowski shouldn’t be far behind.
On that day, they will join seven other Patriots whose numbers will officially be retired. Also on the list is John Hannah, a legendary left guard who wore No. 73 and was named All-Pro 10 times in 13 seasons with the Patriots.
Gino Cappelletti (#20), Mike Haynes (#40), Steve Nelson (#57), Bruce Armstrong (#78), Jim Lee Hunt (#79) and Bob D (#89) were also honored. Of those six players, only Armstrong, a six-time Pro Bowl defensive end, played for Bill Belichick. Armstrong’s last season was 2000, Belichick’s first as Patriots coach.
Given Belichick’s respect for the history of the game, don’t expect to see a player with jersey number 40 on the practice squad this fall. But it will be interesting to see if the rest of the Patriots take the field in a big game with the number 12 or the number 87 on the back of their jersey.
