The New York Giants offense has a new coordinator, and the Buffalo Bills scheme won’t be part of his playbook. Brian Daboll says he wants to run a spread offense that features players who can make quick decisions and allow for high-scoring games with more passing yards than ever before.

Brian Daboll, the head coach of the New York Giants, was hired due of his success in transforming the Buffalo Bills offense from one of the worst in the league to one of the most potent in the league. Despite his offensive prowess, he informed Giants fans at his inaugural news conference that they should not anticipate the same offense in New Jersey as they did in Western New York.

The Buffalo Bills were the NFL’s 22nd-best scoring offense in 2017, scoring just 302 points. Two things occurred in the offseason after that. Josh Allen, a quarterback from Wyoming, was chosen, and Alabama offensive coordinator (and Bill Belichick disciple) Brian Daboll was hired as offensive coordinator.
The Bills struggled throughout the 2018 season with Allen as a raw rookie. The offense placed 30th in the league with with 269 points. The season prompted worries about the quarterback and the offensive coordinator, but the two quickly put their differences aside.
In 2019, the Bills offense began to improve, scoring 314 points and finishing third in the league. It everything came together for Daboll’s team the following year. The Bills’ offense scored 501 points in 2020, good for second in the league, and 483 points in 2021, good for third overall.
Joe Schoen, the new general manager of the New York Giants (and a former Bills assistant GM), chose Daboll to lead his club because he can develop a first-round pick like Allen and build a high-scoring system around him.
His mission is to put Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, Kenny Golladay, and Kadarius Toney in a lineup that can finish in the single digits, rather than 31st (258 points) as they did in 2021.

Daboll demonstrated that he knows the job at his inaugural news conference, which introduced him to the fans and media as the 20th head coach in New York Giants history. He discussed the team’s potential and related an amusing story about seeing quarterback Daniel Jones in the facility during a snowfall.
When Daboll took questions from reporters at his news conference, the first one was about his offense and what it will look like with the Giants. Daboll’s response was:
It will be determined by the players. That is the first and most important point. I don’t believe you can — look, every place I’ve worked, and especially these past four years with Josh [Allen], we attempted to create a system that suited his talent as well as the other components we added. This is going to be a work in progress.

Daboll’s response is interesting since the Giants and Bills have quite different personnel. Jones is a typical pocket passer in the image of Giants icon Eli Manning, while Allen is a larger, more athletic quarterback.
In Saquon Barkley, the G Men have an RB weapon that is much superior to what Buffalo possessed in the backfield under Daboll. To cut a long tale short, it seems that Daboll does not have a one-size-fits-all mindset, which should thrill Giants supporters longing for a champion after a decade without one.
What are the Giants’ options for dealing with Daniel Jones?
One of the main reasons the New York Giants hired Brian Daboll as head coach is to be to work with No. 6 overall selection Daniel Jones in 2019. Is it, though, the greatest decision to maintain Jones at center in 2022?
For next season, Daboll and the Giants have four quarterback options:
- They can retain Jones and see if Daboll can develop him in the same way that Allen was developed.
- As insurance/to compete with Jones, they can bring in an ordinary veteran.
- They have the ability to make a major splash and sign a quarterback like Deshawn Watson or Russell Wilson.
- With one of their two top-10 selections this year, they can choose a quarterback.
This is a difficult decision. The finest draft picks, such as Pitt’s Kenny Pickett, are divisive at best. However, the Giants have two first-round picks, so taking a gamble on a rookie this year may be justified. The franchise could potentially utilize those selections to sign a big star, but a new GM and coach will find it difficult to part with that much draft capital.
It seems like either going with Jones alone or acquiring a veteran quarterback like Jimmy Garoppolo, Gardner Minshew, or Mitchell Trubisky makes the most sense. With free agency and the draft just around the corner, we won’t have to wait long to see what Daboll chooses.
