Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson has been a person of interest in the NFL for the past few seasons. Since his time in college, where he was considered one of the best prospects in the nation, there has been a lot of talk about the curse of the Lions and the disrespect the NFL has shown them. Johnson took the media to task this week when asked about the curse, saying that he doesn’t believe in curses but that there are vibes that are negative.

Fans of the Detroit Lions have had their share of bad luck over the years. They’ve not only seen their club go almost three decades without a postseason victory, but they’ve also seen some of the greatest players in Lions history, Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders, retire at a young age.
Some have claimed that the franchise is cursed as a result of this. How can a team have so much bad luck in such a short period of time? Johnson, who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the near future, recently addressed the subject.
Several great athletes have left the Detroit Lions at an early age.
In the 1989 NFL Draft, the Lions selected Barry Sanders with the No. 3 overall selection, and he soon became a legend. He was named to the first team All-Pro in each of his first three seasons, as well as five times in his first seven.
In 1991, Sanders was a key part of the Lions’ 12-4 record and appearance in the NFC Championship Game.
Sanders retired before the 1999 season, after gaining over 1,000 running yards in each of his ten seasons in Detroit, leading the NFL in rushing four times, and winning the 1997 NFL MVP title.
Calvin Johnson, on the other hand, was selected No. 2 overall by the Lions in the 2007 NFL Draft and quickly established himself as one of the greatest receivers in the game. With the exception of two seasons, Johnson has at least 1,000 receiving yards in every season of his career. He also twice led the NFL in receiving yards, with a total of 1,964 yards in 2012. Megatron also appeared in six Pro Bowls in Detroit and was named to three consecutive first-team All-Pro teams from 2011 to 2013.
Johnson, who was just 30 years old when he retired after the 2015 season, continued to shatter Lions fans’ hearts.

Johnson hasn’t shy away from attacking the Lions since his retirement.
Johnson said earlier this year, according to CBS Sports, that before retiring, he requested if he might play for another club, but Detroit refused. According to Sports Illustrated, the Lions also required him to return at least $1 million of his signing bonus when he retired, similar to what they required Sanders to do when he retired.
Sanders, like Johnson, had a rocky relationship with the club at the end, but the two sides seem to be on much better terms today.
Johnson recently visited on The Pat McAfee Show while prepping for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame later this month. And McAfee finally questioned him whether he believes the Lions are cursed due of the early retirements.
On the Aug. 2 show, Johnson stated, “I’m not going to say anything about curses, but there’s certainly negative vibes there for sure, it’s awful energy there when you do that; 100 percent.” “You’ve got your top players there, and they’re not getting along with the rest of the squad; obviously, that’s terrible energy.”

Since Johnson’s retirement, according to Sports Illustrated, nothing has changed between him and the Lions.
According to SI, he remarked in July, “It’s sort of been a stalemate there.” “I’ve been out for five years now. “I’m not going to waste any time waiting for them.”
Johnson, on the other hand, told McAfee that he supports incoming head coach Dan Campbell, whom he played with for two years on the Lions, as well as the players.
“There are two sides to it: administration and the team, the players,” he said. “I adore the players, and I want to shower my affection on them. I pour all I have into them, and I continue to be able to do so.”
When questioned about his problems with the front office, Johnson claimed he had “little” contact with them throughout his tenure.
“I’ve had some discussions with (owner) Sheila [Ford Hamp] even now,” he added, “but it’s more so about the Hall of Fame.”
For the benefit of the fans, who have gone through a lot, the Lions should be able to work things out with Johnson eventually. After all, he was one of the franchise’s few shining lights in its history. He is deserving of recognition.
