Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a compound fracture of his leg in a game against the Washington Redskins on Sunday. He had to be carted off the field and eventually had surgery to re-set the fracture. In an interview with ESPN on Monday night, Prescott gave an account of what he went through before and after the injury.
A quick recap: After being sacked by the Chargers, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott took to Twitter to air his grievances with his team’s front office. Prescott’s first tweet was a simple complaint about his contract, but the second was far more damning. On Tuesday, Prescott tweeted that he’d been trying to get his own wrist fixed so he could play in the team’s next game. “I tried to set it myself,” Prescott said. “I kicked it too hard.”
Dak Prescott’s now infamous injury happened just nine months ago. Dallas Cowboys QB suffered one of the worst injuries in NFL history: Compound fracture and dislocation of the right ankle.
Prescott is excited and ready as the first start of 2021 approaches. He is also more willing to talk about the injury and share shocking details about the moments that followed.

In the Week 5 game against the rival New York Giants, Prescott jumped out of the pocket with just over six minutes left in the third quarter, according to ESPN. Giants cornerback Logan Ryan caught the former Mississippi State star, and as the players separated, Prescott realized his foot was pointing in a very unnatural direction.
The Cowboys QB1 was diagnosed with a sprained ankle and an open fracture, meaning the bone was broken through the skin.
Dallas eventually won the game 37-34 thanks to a last-minute field goal by substitute Andy Dalton. However, the damage for the Cowboys’ season has already been done. The team lost the next four games and six of the next seven. The boys finished the season with a 6-10 record.
Prescott underwent emergency surgery on his ankle and left the hospital the next day with a recovery time of three to six months.
Prescott spoke with Sage Steele on Up Close with Sage Steele on ESPN+ about the moments immediately following the troubling injury.
The first thing the QB thought was: Get off the field.
This instinct comes from his mother’s instructions when he was young. She would always tell him to get off the field, no matter how badly he was hurt. He went on to explain the efforts he made to achieve this:
Yeah, so I thought he was just rolling, and when I grabbed him and did this, I just thought…. : I need to get out of the field, so I tried to get it back in myself. I tried to beat him into the ground. I was trying to get off the ground and I knew it wasn’t straight, so I wanted to make sure I could get back to straight. And when I couldn’t, I just waved: I can’t do it myself.
The instructors] came in, put him in his place, and it was a relief, wasn’t it? Prescott said to Steele. You can imagine how much pain he was in, and then he got a boost. I remember saying over and over again: Oh, thank God.
Prescott stated as well: Thank God for the shock that allowed him to not feel intense pain as many might have suspected.
NFL QBs are regularly hit below the belt and suffer terrible leg injuries. Last season alone, rookie Joe Barrow suffered a torn ACL at kickoff, and Washington quarterback Kyle Allen was also out with a sprained ankle.
But only two quarterbacks in NFL history know what Prescott goes through after sustaining such an injury at the height of his career. Ironically, both played for Dallas’ rival football team, Washington.
Former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann is known for breaking his leg after beating Lawrence Taylor on Monday Night Football in 1985 and never playing football again. Thirty-three years later, Alex Smith also suffered an open fracture. During the operation he suffered infectious complications and nearly lost his leg and possibly his life. However, he made a heroic return in the 2020 season.
Prescott’s injury came at a much younger age than those two QBs, but he also relies on his legs more than those two. Still, he’s confident he can get back into shape.
If you ask me, the Cowboys and Las Vegas believe in Prescott. Jerry Jones rewarded Prescott with a huge new contract in the offseason, and in Las Vegas, Prescott is seen as a favorite to become 2021 NFL Player of the Year.
