The Dallas Cowboys’ rookie running back, Ezekiel Elliott, gave us one of the most compelling radio interviews in recent memory on Friday. Here are some of the highlights: Ezekiel Elliott: “I think a lot of people, they wonder why I’m running through the hole. People have to understand, I’m doing it for them. I feel like I’m the only one who understands that right now.” Ezekiel Elliott: “I feel that, in the next couple of years, I’m going to be one of the best in this game. Dak Prescott: “I like the Ezekiel Elliott’s enthusiasm.” Dak Prescott: “He’s a good back. I have a lot of respect for him.”
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is known to be one of the most entertaining players in the NFL. He’s impulsive, outspoken, outspoken, and his scouting report on running back Ezekiel Elliott is right up there with his on-field antics.

Still, it’s safe to say the Cowboys didn’t expect Elliott to be a starter for his 26th birthday. The anniversary is starting to go the wrong way. Two seasons ago, Elliott accounted for 1,357 yards and 12 touchdowns on 301 passes. He also caught 54 passes for 420 yards and two touchdowns. By 2020, however, productivity will have fallen dramatically. And while the offensive line’s injury problems haven’t helped the Cowboys, Elliott’s disappointing season can’t be ignored when you look at other key indicators. The former Ohio State star finished the year with a minimum of 979 yards in 15 games. He also set a career record with just six touchdowns. In fact, Elliott’s numbers have declined every year. His average yards per game went from 108.7 as a rookie to 98.3 in his second season in Dallas. In 2018, that number dropped to 95.6. Elliott is averaging 84.8 yards per game in 2019, compared to 65.3 last season. Oh, he also went from averaging 5.1 yards per carry in 2016 to a career low of 4.0 yards per carry in 2020.
The rest of the NFL should be wary after hearing Dak Prescott’s scouting report

But that doesn’t mean his days as an elite racer are over. In fact, Elliott can quickly allay fears of a possible decline. If his quarterback scouting report turns out to be accurate, the rest of the NFL could be in for a nightmare if the Cowboys bet on the run. Zeke looks good, Prescott told The Dallas Morning News. He’s in the best shape of his life. It looks fast. Everyone has seen videos of him training alone with a running trainer. His cuts, his explosiveness. I’m looking forward to another full year with him and making sure he stays healthy through the season. It’s often said that he’s in the best shape of his life, but Elliott would be a much bigger threat if that claim turns out to be true. He seemed to have lost a step (maybe even two) last season, and his overall speed and agility have declined in recent years. But at his best, the 6-foot-1, 228-pound Elliott is able to break through defenses with his combination of size, strength and explosiveness. If he’s healthy and Zeke does his job, he’s the best running back in the league, Prescott said. It’s just interesting to see him in the best shape of his life, or the best shape he’s ever been in the NFL. It will be something special for us in the future.
Can Prescott and Elliott lead the Cowboys to the playoffs?
. A healthy, motivated and better version of Elliott can only mean good things for the Cowboys. But will he and Prescott be able to lead the team to the playoffs? Much of that depends on the health of the offensive line. Can future Hall of Fame member Tyrone Smith stay at the left guard position for a while? Or is it time for him to end his career? Will La’el Collins show up this year? While Smith played two games before being placed on injury reserve, Collins was a no-brainer in 2020. After undergoing hip surgery in October, he has yet to prove he can still play at a high level after missing an entire season. If the veteran defenders stay healthy, Prescott and Elliott have a much better chance of justifying their lucrative contracts. Dallas has a trio of interesting receivers (Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, C.D. Lamb) and a reliable tight end in Blake Jarwin. So Prescott clearly has plenty of weapons in the passing game. In addition, Elliott can make an impact as a receiver. But in the end, Jones did not extend his $90 million contract with the three-time Pro Bowler to catch passes out of the backfield. And if Elliott doesn’t start developing in the right direction as a pure running back, the Cowboys may have to think about dropping him.
