Derrick Rose’s older brother, Reggie, was arrested in 2007 on drug charges and has served prison time. Per ESPN Chicago reporter Nick Friedell, Derrick was a “long shot” to be drafted by the Bulls due to his “some background history with his older brother.” However he ended up being drafted 3rd overall in 2008 before becoming Rookie of the Year that year.

Derrick Rose is a former NBA player who was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 2008. His older brother, Reggie, was also drafted by the Bulls. In 2007, Derrick’s brother was arrested for sexual assault and threatened to kill Derrick if he didn’t leave the team.

Derrick Rose Almost Wasn't Drafted by His Hometown Bulls Because of 'Some Background History' With His Older Brother

Derrick Rose was selected first overall by his hometown Chicago Bulls in the 2008 NBA Draft. The dynamic point guard had a terrific season for the Memphis Tigers in his lone college season, and he was selected ahead of Michael Beasley, who went to the Miami Heat at No. 2.

Rose ranks seventh in field goals, fifth in assists, tenth in points, and eighth in points per game in Bulls history. However, due to his elder brother, he practically never played a single game for Chicago.

Derrick Rose was nearly not drafted by the Bulls.

Pooh: The Derrick Rose Story, Rose’s documentary, aired in 2019. During the documentary, Derrick’s elder brother (Reggie) confessed that his previous indiscretions almost cost him a spot with the Bulls in 2008.

Reggie Rose remarked, “We didn’t truly know Chicago was going to draft Derrick until the night before.” “Then we got a call from Chicago.” Derrick was informed by Chicago that they really want to draft him, but there’s some backstory with his brother, and we’re talking about me. Because of the errors I’ve done in my life, he may not be the No. 1 choice, but Derrick told the Chicago Bulls, “If you can’t accept my brother, don’t choose me.”

The Bulls conducted their homework and discovered that the Roses were a close-knit family full of excellent people. They took Derrick with the first overall choice and watched him excel for his hometown of Chicago.

Derrick Rose was a huge part of the Bulls’ success.

During his debut season, Rose participated in 81 games. He was named Rookie of the Year after averaging 16.8 points and 6.3 assists. The Bulls finished the regular season with a 41-game winning streak and were the No. 8 seed in the 2009 playoffs. In the first round, they pushed the Boston Celtics to seven games, giving the reigning champs a fight for their money.

In the Celtics series, Rose averaged 19.7 points and 6.4 assists per game, including 36 points and 11 assists in Game 1. Only Luka Doncic (42) and George Mikan (37) have scored more points in their first postseason appearance.

In Year 2, the Windy City Assassin improved in his debut year, averaging 20.8 points and 6.0 assists. As a reserve, he was named to the All-Star team, making him the first Bulls player to do it since Michael Jordan.

Rose became the youngest MVP in NBA history when he won the MVP Award in his third season (22 years and 191 days old on the final day of the regular season). He averaged 25.0 points and 7.7 assists per game while leading the Bulls to the NBA’s best record. The only players in Bulls history to win Rookie of the Year and MVP are Rose and Jordan.

Rose only participated in 39 games during the 2011-12 season, which was reduced to 55 games due to a lockout. His body was steadily breaking down owing to his reckless style of play, but he still made the All-Star squad and ended the season with averages of 21.8 points and 7.9 assists. The Memphis native tore his left ACL in Game 1 of the Bulls’ first-round series against the 76ers and missed the whole 2012-13 campaign.

Unfortunately, Rose’s injuries didn’t stop once he tore his ACL.

MVP has undergone seven surgeries in all.

Rose has had seven surgeries since earning MVP in 2011. Four knee operations, one eye surgery, one elbow surgery, and one ankle surgery have all been performed on him. Rose had three knee operations with the Bulls before being moved to the New York Knicks in the summer of 2016 as a result of the rise of Jimmy Butler and the controversy surrounding all of the games he missed.

Rose averaged 19.7 points and 6.2 assists per game in 406 games with the Bulls. Poohdini has played for the Knicks (twice), Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Detroit Pistons since his Chicago days ended. He has averaged 18.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 5.4 assists in his career.

During the Timberwolves’ 2018-19 season, Rose set a career best with 50 points. It was an emotional night for the one-time MVP, who has battled health issues and missed a month of the 2017-18 season.

Although Bulls fans booed Rose when he initially returned to the United Center in 2016, likely because they were disappointed he didn’t play in the 2013 playoffs after doctors allowed him to return following his ACL injury, they have showered him with love and MVP shouts in every game since.

Basketball Reference provided the statistics.

Derrick Rose’s return to the New York Knicks might provide them a boost without requiring a major trade. RELATED: NBA Trade Deadline: Derrick Rose’s Return Could Give New York Knicks a Boost Without Needing a Major Deal
