The New York Knicks are on pace to win a mere 22 games this season and haven’t won more than three consecutive contests since early December. A lack of talent is putting an unbearable strain on the team’s best player, Carmelo Anthony – but there remains hope for the future. Is it too late for a turnaround?

The “nba standings” is a statistic that shows the progress of teams in the NBA. The Knicks have had a miserable first half of the season, and many have been wondering what has gone wrong with them.

Explaining the New York Knicks Miserable First Half of the NBA Season

The New York Knicks have a long and illustrious history in the NBA. Throughout the 1950s, 1970s, and 1990s, they were a constant winner. However, they’ve been at a standstill for a while now.

The Knickerbockers’ last postseason triumph came in the Carmelo Anthony era, when they advanced to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs in 2012-13 — until last year, when they won the No. 4 seed in the East and hosted a playoff series at Madison Square Garden.

Big things were anticipated of a 2021-22 squad that looked to have upgraded its roster during the summer, but that hasn’t happened.

Why have the Knicks deteriorated so much after such a promising season in 2020-21?

In 2020-21, the New York Knicks qualified for the NBA playoffs for the first time in eight years.

Prior to the 2020 season, the team made some much-needed adjustments.

Leon Rose, a veteran CAA agent, was named president of the Knicks. According to NBA.com, Rose has hired William Wesley, or World Wide Wes, as the team’s new Executive Vice President.

They were an unusual team to lead a business, but New York sorely needed to change things up, and they did so.

The club had a quiet offseason, which was another unusual turn of events. Austin Rivers, Alec Burks, and Nerlens Noel were minor free agent signings, while Obi Toppin and Immanuel Quickley were first-round picks. The Knicks didn’t just throw cash at second-tier free agents.

The most major move made by New York was the hiring of Tom Thibodeau, the former head coach of the Chicago Bulls and the Minnesota Timberwolves, to — pardon the repetition of the term — transform the culture. Thibs, on the other hand, was recruited for just such reason.

All of this came together to provide the team’s first home playoff series in eight years, and a glimmer of optimism, I think. The Knicks were defeated by Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks at the Garden, but the season was seen as a success by all accounts.

In the years 2021-22, another stride forward was predicted. But, oh, no.

What has led New York to regress this season?

With no Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, James Harden, or Ben Simmons, the Knicks wasted a 28-point lead to the Brooklyn Nets heading into the All-Star break. Cam Thomas, a rookie, scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and nailed a game-winning three with 7.7 seconds left.

It was the ideal way to cap off a disappointing first half of the season.

New York is in 12th position in the East with a score of 25-34. The defeat against the Nets brought the team’s final 10-game record to 2-8 going into the break.

The Knicks’ decline may be attributed to a number of factors:

  • At the age of 26, Julius Randle had a great year, and New York re-signed him to a four-year, $117 million contract. His popularity has dropped across the board.
  • Kemba Walker was signed to a low-risk contract in free agency and has struggled to the point of being benched.
  • Evan Fournier was brought in to provide a scoring punch, but he has only averaging 14.5 points per game.
  • Burks is the sixth-leading scorer on the squad.
  • Toppin hasn’t yet matured into the player the team expected him to be as the eighth overall choice.
  • The franchise’s potential centerpiece In his third season, RJ Barrett hasn’t been able to make a regular jump.

The offense was scheduled to be led by Fournier, Walker, Barrett, and Randle. New York is currently ranked 27th in the league in terms of points per game and 29th in terms of assists. The ball is still in the air and hasn’t made it into the hoop.

The Knicks are allowing more points (106.6) than they are scoring, while being the eighth-best team in points allowed (105.1). “Essentially everything” is the answer to what went wrong.

The franchise will very certainly have to start again next year.

There isn’t much chance for the rest of the season unless something spectacular happens. New York just lacks the necessary components to compete.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith — a Knicks fan himself — went off on the organization on NBA Countdown.

“The New York Knicks are a national embarrassment, ladies and gentlemen,” Smith remarked in part. It’s not off to a good start.

Then, after slamming Thibodeau, he turned his attention on Randle. Then there was Rose.

“I mean, we’ve had people in state prisons that are more visible than this individual,” says Leon Rose. He’s the basketball operations president. We haven’t been able to locate this individual. They’re garbage! Horrible!”

Smith may be exaggerated and too enthusiastic at times, but I’m sure Knicks fans would agree with him.

This summer, Rose and Wes will have to reorganize the roster once again. This club will not be restored to respectability with a one-season return to the playoffs.

At MSG, things must shift once again.
