The Bills were a huge favorite to win the game, but history says that their divisional round matchup with Buffalo will be one-sided. The Chiefs are 7 point favorites in this highly anticipated match up.

History Says Chiefs-Bills Divisional Round Matchup Will Be a Lopsided Affair

It’s the NFL Playoffs Divisional Round’s most anticipated game. What’s the harm in that? The Kansas City Chiefs, who are attempting to become just the fourth team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls, will face the Buffalo Bills, whom they defeated in the AFC Championship Game last season.

For the divisional round, this is a fantastic matchup. Josh Allen vs. Patrick Mahomes Tyreek Hill is up against Stefon Diggs.

But, if history is any indicator, we’re in for a major disappointment, even if we’re not part of the winning team’s fan group.

The Bills and Chiefs will meet in the playoffs for the sixth time in franchise history, dating back to Lenny Dawson and Jack Kemp in the 1967 AFL Championship Game. In the meantime, the AFC championship was decided by a game between Joe Montana and Jim Kelly.

So much history, so many celebrities, so much at stake.

Despite this, there isn’t a single close game among the lot. There were no games decided by fewer than 14 points in any of the four. Here’s a glance back, as well as a look forward:

After six years of intense rivalry, draft-pick snatching, and free-agent conflicts, the National Football League and the upstart American Football League have finally agreed that if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. In 1966, the two leagues announced a merger that would take effect in time for the 1970 season, but in the meanwhile, a new “AFL-NFL Championship Game” would premiere in January 1967 at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

After observing one of his children play with a Super Ball toy, Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt would go down in pop-culture history as the man who gave the championship game its name, the “Super Bowl.”

However, before the game gained its well-known name, it had to be played by two teams. On the NFL side, Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers were already far into their dynasty, and they would beat the Dallas Cowboys in the first of two consecutive NFL Championship Games to reach the inaugural Super Bowl.

Hunt’s Chiefs would rise to the momentous occasion in the AFL, defeating the Bills 31-7 in the AFL Championship Game. Dawson threw two touchdown passes, one to the great Otis Taylor, and Mike Garrett, the former USC star who was replaced by a running back called O.J. Simpson on the Trojans, rushed for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

In actual time, the inaugural AFL-NFL Championship Game was a disaster. While the game was aired live on both CBS and NBC, the Coliseum was only half-full, and the game was even worse, with the Packers dominating 35-10. With time, everything improved.

In the same game, Joe Montana’s era and the Super Bowl Bills’ era come to an end.

Before this Sunday, the Bills and Chiefs had only played in a postseason game that wasn’t the AFL/AFC Championship Game in 1991, the second of the Bills’ four consecutive Super Bowl appearances.

Kelly connected with Andre Reed for a pair of first-half touchdowns, and James Lofton grabbed a third Kelly touchdown throw in the third quarter to give the Bills a 24-0 lead in their Divisional Round game.

And, as we know from the Bills of the early 1990s, they only come back from huge second-half deficits, not surrender them, thus this game was gone shortly.

In 1991, the Chiefs’ starting quarterback was Steve DeBerg, and the Chiefs clearly knew that if they were to have the same level of success as the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s, they needed to replace DeBerg with Joe Montana. After the 1992 season, they made the trade for Montana.

The Chiefs won in overtime against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round, then rallied from a 10-0 first-quarter hole against the Houston Oilers to get to the AFC Championship Game behind three Montana touchdown throws.

The Montana Magic, however, came to an end there. With a 30-13 win, the Bills proceeded to their fourth and final Super Bowl. This was truly a contest going into the fourth quarter, with the Bills leading 20-13. Thurman Thomas’ third touchdown of the day in the fourth quarter, though, ensured the Bills’ record fourth consecutive AFC championship.

Montana and the Bills would never play in another Super Bowl. Until now, that is.

The Chiefs are aiming for a back-to-back victory against the Bills on Sunday.

The first and third choices in the 2018 NFL Draft, respectively, were Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold. “Thank you,” the Bills say.

Josh Allen of Wyoming, Buffalo’s quarterback, was selected at No. 7. And all he’s done is lead the Bills to the playoffs each of the last three seasons, including a return to the AFC Championship Game for the first time since the 1994 Montana-Kelly matchup.

Last year, it was Allen vs. Mahomes, with Kansas City coming out on top in the midst of their five-game winning streak. The Bills learned the hard way what many of the Chiefs’ postseason opponents have learned during the Mahomes era: no lead is safe.

The Bills jumped off to a fast 9-0 lead, but Kansas City responded by scoring three touchdowns in a 10-minute stretch in the second quarter to grab a 21-9 lead and never look back in a 38-24 triumph.

The clubs will face again in the Divisional Round on Sunday. The Bills scored scores on all seven of their drives against the Patriots last week, whereas the Chiefs scored touchdowns on six consecutive possessions against the Steelers.

Josh, how about allowing the Chiefs to score first?

Pro Football Reference provided the statistics.

DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE DE Josh Allen and the Bills should be even more motivated as a result of Frank Clark’s poor choice of words.
