Although Alex Caruso is the first NBA player to shave his head, he’s certainly not the first to receive a nickname that’s completely out of context. In fact, Caruso isn’t even the first to have a mongoose-themed nickname. In April of 2014, the Miami Heat selected mongoose guard Tyler Johnson with the 43rd overall pick, and months later, Johnson was called “Mongoose” by fans, media, and teammates.

In his first season in the NBA, Lakers guard Alex Caruso is trying to live up to his nickname: the “Bald Mamba.” The “Bald Mamba” nickname is a take off of NBA legend Kobe Bryant’s nickname “Black Mamba,” a reference to Bryant’s snake tattoo.

Alex Caruso is a very live and loud personality. In fact, he’s the type of player who shows his emotions and feelings on the court constantly.

Alex Caruso, a favorite with Lakers fans, is known for his sloppy play and relentless defense. His entrance into the NBA hasn’t been easy, so the guard is enjoying his time in the spotlight. Now a major factor in the Lakers’ success, Caruso is LeBron James’ secret weapon and the spark the team needs. He also gets a lot of criticism from his teammates, mainly because of his looks. While he doesn’t look like a typical NBA player – he might be an accountant or an engineer – Caruso has turned his average looks and bald head into a lucrative business.

Alex Caruso’s difficult journey to the NBA

In college, he played for the Texas A&M Aggies and averaged 8.0 points and 4.7 assists per game. After not being selected in the 2016 NBA Draft, Caruso participated in the NBA Summer League with the Philadelphia 76ers. He eventually signed with the G-League of the NBA. In 2017, he was part of the Lakers’ Summer League and eventually made the jump to the big leagues, playing his first NBA game in October 2017. Caruso probably won’t put up big numbers, but he doesn’t have to. There are other guys on the team for that. Instead, he does little things that help change the game. He defends hard and that leads to an interception or a shot that changes the whole game. You can’t teach these things, and that’s one of the reasons fans and teammates love Caruso. Caruso’s teammate Anthony Davis had nothing but praise for him in interviews at SI. He is not the best paid, he does not have all the accolades and merits. And a lot of people don’t notice that. But he plays it well. He’s defending himself. He makes difficult throws. He’s a bully.

Alex Caruso makes fun of his nickname Bald Mamba

He’s a bully, but the fans have better nicknames for him. Called the Bald Mamba or the Bald Eagle, Caruso is quick to inspire. Speaking to GQ, he said: For me, going through the G-League when I wasn’t drafted, having fans who were excited to call me or celebrate a success? I was all for it. I know their intentions are good, and you never feel uncomfortable. There are mostly Lakers fans there. The Bald Mamba also has its own distinctive style. By his thinning hair and the bandage on his head, fans immediately know he’s on the field. He even has his own festive headband, another reason why he is loved by fans and teammates alike.

Caruso uses his bald head

Last year, Caruso partnered with Manscaped, a men’s grooming brand, to raise money to fight testicular cancer by shaving his entire head bald. This collaboration led to his first contract with the company, which was to promote the Lawnmower, a body trimmer designed to treat the groin. As for thinning his hair, Caruso isn’t worried. Whatever you want to do, do it. It’s just for her, for life. So if you want to make a wig and put on caps, go ahead. If you want to shave everything, shave everything. It’s your life, after all. He joins the ranks of other famous bald athletes such as tennis star Andre Agassi and football great Zinedine Zidane. And of course, one of the greatest basketball players of all time was bald: Michael Jordan. But it’s not his looks that matter, it’s Caruso’s ability to play and change the game that makes him an important part of the Lakers.
