This is a story that is just too good to pass by. It’s one of those stories that make you think, “hmmmm, maybe I should think about it that way.”
Every now and then, an athlete has to wonder if they were supposed to be right-handed or left-handed. Neil Lennon had a look at this in the recent days, after he was forced to switch from his left to his right hand to settle a dispute with the referee. While the decision was a correct one, the fact that most people are right-handed, means that it is easier to be incorrect, and even more so, when the problem is an imaginary one.
As a Lefty, I’ve always wondered how it is that so many players are so comfortable with their stick and ball in their “wrong” hand. I’ve read this won’t help you in hockey, or boxing, but that’s just it: these sports are about who can do the most with what they have. It’s about using whatever you have, not playing with your strengths.
Ben Simmons has the potential to be a durable superstar for the Philadelphia 76ers. He is one of the most versatile defenders in the NBA, has excellent court vision and a good playmaker, and can also finish shots around the rim with either hand. The only problem? He can’t shoot. Or rather, he refuses to do so.
Simmons’ inability to shoot the ball and make use of space on the pitch killed the Sixers with a 4-3 defeat against the Atlanta Hawks, and his future with the club is now very much in doubt. The polarizing point guard has no chance to reach his full potential unless he figures out how to turn his jumper into a moderate threat, and that solution may already be jumping out at him straight .
Ben Simmons’ shooting troubles reach a new record

Simmons has been a popular joke on NBA Twitter throughout his career, but the insults reached new heights after the Sixers lost Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on their home court Sunday night. Throughout the series, Simmons has barely played offensively. He seemed like a black hole that the Hawks didn’t even have to worry about in the half, which ultimately led to Philadelphia’s loss.
But the various statistics on Simmons’ offensive play this postseason are even more embarrassing than the game report. Put your seat belt on.
Ben Simmons made 25 of 73 shots from the free throw line in this year’s playoffs. That’s 34.2%, the worst percentage in NBA history for a single postseason.
Simmons averaged just 6.4 shots per game against the Hawks on attempts. He scored just 9.8 points per game despite shooting 50% or better in all but one game in the series.
Simmons has made three throws in the fourth quarter in all seven games against Atlanta. He hasn’t shot in the fourth quarter in the last four games of the series.
That’s enough. For Simmons, it was time for a radical change.
Is Simmons naturally right-handed?
.
Simmons has been shooting left-handed since his NBA debut four years ago, but there has always been something special about his shot. When the 24-year-old approaches the ring, he usually throws with his right hand. His right hand is much more flexible, so he uses that for shots, dunks, hook shots and cops in the paint.
In the 12 games he has played this season, Simmons has thrown 67 pitches with his right hand, 19 pitches with both hands at once and a total of nine pitches with his left hand, according to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer.
What are we doing here? Simmons is a natural right-handed pitcher and has even admitted that in the past.
In 2016, Simmons told Kevin Armstrong of the New York Daily News that he grew up hitting right-handed, but that his father insisted he develop the stroke and fielding game with lefties.
I think I’m supposed to be right-handed, he said. It’s only natural now.
Even Simmons’ former teammates agree that he’s a better right-handed hitter. J.J. Redick, who played two seasons with Simmons for the Sixers, recently said on his podcast The Old Man and the Three , that he has approached Simmons and DeAndre Jordan about a move to the right side.
I saw her shoot with her right hand. That’s the best shape for right-handers, Redick said. You do everything else with your right hand, I don’t see why you would throw a basketball with your left hand.
We are, J.J. We don’t know that either.
Sixth indeterminate future
.
Simmons was already facing an uncertain future in Philadelphia after a disappointing 2021 postseason, but his fate was all but sealed by Joel Embiid and Doc Rivers after an embarrassing Game 7 loss against the 76ers.
Honestly, I think the turning point came when we got, I don’t know how to put it, an open shot and we made a free throw, the Sixers’ center said after the game, referring to a play in which Simmons gave up a late open dunk for a pass in traffic.
When Rivers was asked in the post-game press conference if Simmons could be a point guard on the championship team, he couldn’t even give an optimistic answer.
At this point, I don’t know the answer to that question, he said.
The Simmons era in Philadelphia is falling apart fast. It is high time for the struggling star to return to his right hand.
Hey, it can’t get any worse, right?
