The Yankees are still waiting for the all-star break to end, but they had a doozy of a day yesterday against the Twins. Toronto native Joey Gallo absolutely smoked his first home run as a Yankee. Gallo is a legitimate power hitter, and he showed all of it off in yesterday’s game against the Twins. Joe Girardi said that Gallo was swinging too hard, which was undoubtedly the cause of the home run. However, this is a guy who can hit the ball out of any ballpark in the majors.
After the Yankees traded for Gallo in July, he spent the rest of the season getting some time at DH, but didn’t end up using the position much. His only homers came on the road, as the Yankees often used him as a pinch-hitter. The home runs came in the Yankees’ final home game of the season against the Indians, when Gallo hit a three-run shot to lead off the seventh.

Well, that’s what happened in the top of the 9th inning of game 4 on Sunday, with Starlin Castro lining a ball into the right field stands at Yankee Stadium. Joey Gallo was acquired to the New York Yankees as one of the major additions at this year’s MLB trade deadline, with the goal of putting the club back in contention for the playoffs. New York has underperformed leading up to the trade deadline, prompting general manager Brian Cashman to make a big purchase.
The Yankees also acquired Anthony Rizzo, a three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner, from the Chicago Cubs. Rizzo was one of four important players dealt by the Cubs as they embarked on a full-fledged rebuilding effort.
Gallo struggled to get off to a good start in the Bronx, going hitless in his first two games and failing to hit a home run in his first six. Gallo isn’t renowned for his hitting average; he was brought in by the Yankees to hit the big ball. Needless to say, a large number of Yankees fans were becoming worried about their new outfielder’s lack of performance.
Gallo, on the other hand, eventually broke the duck on August 5 against the Seattle Mariners, and he did it in spectacular manner.

When it comes to the AL playoff scenario, the Yankees are still on the outside looking in, but they’re rapidly closing the distance. They’ve won eight of their past ten games and are a full ten games above.500 after beating the Mariners on Thursday night.
Much of the team’s recent success may be credited to Rizzo (who has been on fire since joining New York), but Gallo on a regular basis would only make the Yankees more dangerous.
Gallo has shown year after year that when he’s on fire, he can be one of the game’s most deadly hitters, and there’s nothing like a game-winning, record-setting home run to get a guy back into the swing of things. Gallo also smashed two doubles before his grand slam, demonstrating that the former Texas Ranger may have rediscovered his swing.
