The Buffalo Bills are in the midst of an offseason unlike any they’ve ever experienced, and the team’s apparent desire to lock up quarterback Josh Allen, the 7th overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, is a major part of it. Allen, 22, is under contract through 2022, making him the youngest player in the league to sign such a deal. Recent reports indicate the Bills want to keep him, but if they’re going to spend the No. 7 pick on a seasoned veteran, they may have to use a second-round pick on a quarterback who can develop behind AJ McCarron, the team’s starter in 2018.

Medical bills for surgeries and hospital treatment are a common issue for people who have suffered serious injuries or illnesses. While no one wants to be taken advantage of by unscrupulous individuals, medical bills can be a source of serious stress and anxiety in even the most well-meaning people.

The Buffalo Bills have finally found their franchise player; Josh Allen proved last year that he has a chance to become a legendary quarterback and lead the team to great success for years to come. But like any other QB who signs a rookie contract, Allen eventually has to get paid, and if he continues to play at the same level he did in 2020, Allen will get paid a lot. But his desire for a contract should be music to the ears of the Bills’ mafia.

Josh Allen has two years left on the Bills

.

In May, the Bills exercised the fifth-year option on Allen’s contract, meaning he now has a contract with the team for 2021 and 2022. According to Spotrac, Allen will earn $3.5 million this season and $23 million in 2022.

He certainly deserves a fifth year after leading the Bills to the playoffs in each of the last two seasons and the AFC Championship Game in 2020. Allen was also one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in 2020. He earned Pro Bowl honors with 4,544 yards, 37 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions.

All this success also means that Allen will be getting a big contract in the near future. Patrick Mahomes makes the most money of any quarterback in the NFL – $45 million per season. Right behind him is Dak Prescott with $40 million, followed by Deshaun Watson ($39 million), Russell Wilson ($35 million), Jared Goff and Aaron Rodgers ($33.5 million).

Given that Allen played at the same level as most of these QBs last season, and at a higher level than Goff, he should certainly be able to get a contract in the $30-40 million per year range.

His desire to get a contract would help the Bills

If anything, Allen will end up with a lot of money. But according to reports, if he does, he’ll probably want to help the Bills out a bit.

I’ve heard that Allen loves Buffalo so much that he’s willing to structure things to help the team out a little bit, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said recently on SportsCenter, according to Bleacher Report. Of course, there’s no way to write him off – he’s a top 5 quarterback. But he wants them to stay competitive in the coming years with him on the team.

So, according to these reports, Allen basically wants to make sure his contract doesn’t lead to financial problems for the Bills, and as Bleacher Report notes, the Bills could be following the lead of the Kansas City Chiefs. Mahomes makes the most money in NFL history, but he and the Chiefs have made his contract team-friendly so KC can fill holes in the roster if needed.

Whatever the Bills decide, Allen seems to want them to remain competitive after his rookie contract expires.

Josh Allen probably doesn’t want to repeat the mistakes of other QBs who signrookies

.

Allen could easily be the QB who led his team to a conference championship and won the Super Bowl while on a cheap rookie contract, but couldn’t really lay claim to it after he was paid. But he seems to have learned from the mistakes of other QBs.

Of course, other factors come into play in both situations, but Russell Wilson, who has a rookie contract with the Seattle Seahawks, got a four-year, $2.9 million deal. He led Seattle to two Super Bowls in his second and third seasons, winning one in his second year. After Wilson signed an $87.6 million contract in 2015, however, the Seahawks never advanced beyond the divisional round. They’ve also lost in the Wild Card round in two of the last three seasons.

Jared Goff, meanwhile, led the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl in the 2018 season and has a four-year, $27.9 million rookie contract. But after signing a contract extension in 2019 and paying more than $25 million a year in 2019 and 2020, the Rams missed the playoffs two seasons ago. They lost in the divisional round last year and traded Goff in the offseason.

Allen seems much more talented than Goff, and the Seahawks had other problems after the Legion Boom loss, but it seems the Bills’ star has learned from the mistakes of others and wants to succeed in Buffalo long term.

The Mafia Bills must be thrilled.
