During his famous career with the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant, like Michael Jordan before him and LeBron James after him, was often targeted by opposing players. During those years, he had a slew of heated fights, and his colleagues stars nearly always did their hardest to give him their all.
Former New Jersey Nets and Denver Nuggets standout Kenyon Martin, for example, compared their fights to chess matches. He even just remembered a moment when Bryant totally perplexed him.
The Lakers and Kobe Bryant had a heated fight with Kenyon Martin.
Kenyon Martin began his career in the Eastern Conference, having been selected first overall in the 2000 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. So, since the Lakers are in the West, he didn’t have much of a chance to play Kobe Bryant, although the two did meet in the 2002 NBA Finals.
The Los Angeles Lakers comfortably won the series, sweeping New Jersey 4-0 for their third straight championship, although Martin and Bryant both dominated for their respective teams. Martin led the Nets in scoring with 22.0 points per game, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists, while the latter averaged 26.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists for the Lakers.
After earning an All-Star selection with the Nets in 2003-04, Martin was moved to the Denver Nuggets in 2004-05, where he joined Bryant in the Western Conference. The two stars began to see one other on a much more regular basis after that.
The Nuggets and Lakers played in the Western Conference Finals in 2008-09. It was a close battle, but LA came out on top in six games. In the series, Bryant averaged 34.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game, while Martin averaged 12.5 points and 7.2 rebounds.
The Cincinnati native kept running into Bryant until his last season in 2014-15 (Kobe’s career ended the following year in 2015-16). Martin, on the other hand, recently revealed how severe their fights were.
On the Sept. 20 edition of the No Chill Between Gilbert Arenas podcast, he stated, “It was a chess match with me and him.” “And that’s why, throughout the years, I’ve thought [Kobe] is very excellent. Because I can halt your A (move), your B (move) for most men. He’s going to C and D.”
Bryant, on the other hand, baffled Martin during one encounter.

Martin recounted the moment Mamba stunned him with an amazing shot while talking about how deadly Kobe Bryant was.
“They used to run a little pitch-back play as they came up (the court),” Martin recalled. “… They ran pistol, and he tossed it back to him (Kobe); of course, we used to swap it with me. We turn it off, and I body him, boom, boom. He exited the building and was getting ready to shoot it. I’ve got it under control. With his left hand, he shot that item off the glass.”
The shot went in as anticipated, which caught Martin completely off guard.
“I was like, ‘Hey guy, don’t do it any longer, man,” Martin said. “’Hey guy, don’t do it again, dog,’ he said as we were rushing back down.”
Although the shot seems to be spectacular, Bryant made a lot of them during his career. He even confessed once that he would sometimes simply toss the ball up and be as shocked as the rest of the team when it went in.
Martin’s remarks, on the other hand, show how much he admired Bryant and his game.
Kenyon Martin held Kobe Bryant in high regard.
How can anybody not admire Kobe Bryant and his accomplishments with the Lakers? He was named to 18 All-Star teams, won five NBA titles, two Finals MVPs, and was named league MVP in 2007-08. Bryant is also fourth all-time in NBA scoring with 33,643 points.
Martin, like many other former players and fans, seems to have a lot of respect for Bryant. He said that Kobe’s passion for the game was evident, given that the former Nets star finished in the top 20 in defensive rating three times throughout his career, including two top-five performances in 2002-03 and 2003-04.
“It (their fights) was extremely competitive, but it was also enjoyable, and there was mutual respect for one other — at his attacking skill and my ability to defend people,” Martin said.
Throughout his career, Kobe Bryant caused many opponents a hard day on the court, but it seems that such fights were also a lot of fun for basketball players like Martin.
It was simply two great players battling it out, and they were battling it out hard.
