That is said with regard to Murray, who had a great first two months until hurting his ankle just before Halloween. However, his chances of winning MVP have dwindled in recent weeks, and he can only blame Cardinals management.

Even after the Cardinals’ first defeat of the season on Oct. 28, bookies saw Murray as a possible MVP contender. On Nov 2, the third-year quarterback had the second-highest MVP odds (+600, or wager $100 and win $700) behind only Buffalo’s Josh Allen (+225), according to Sports Betting Dime.
In that time, a lot has happened, and the Cardinals have held Murray out for the past two weeks in the hopes of keeping him healthy for the second half of the season. At a consequence, on Monday, Nov. 15, SBD set his MVP odds as +1600. He is still in seventh place, but he has a lot of distance to make up in the next two months.
The dialogue would have stopped there if the Cardinals had put Murray on injured reserve. In each of the previous two weekends, though, the organization has officially ruled him out. Colt McCoy started both games before suffering a pectoral injury in a Week 10 defeat to Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.
Fortunately for the Cardinals, they are still 8-2 and on their way to making the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Murray will, however, have to wait until 2022 to receive his first NFL MVP Award.
Murray should strive to emulate Lamar Jackson and Steve McNair’s success.
The NFL has the scheduling structure that you may have grown up watching from 1978 through 2020. Each club played 16 regular-season games and four preseason games, depending on the weather.
Only seven players received the MVP Award without participating in all 16 games during that time period, excluding the strike-shortened 1982 and 1987 seasons. Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49ers achieved the feat twice, missing three games in 1989 and one game the following year.
Murray’s winning MVP honors is potentially conceivable if he just plays 15 games. To achieve so, he’ll have to follow in the footsteps of some of the game’s best players.
Emmitt Smith of the Dallas Cowboys (1993), Marshall Faulk of the St. Louis Rams (2000), and Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair (2003) all missed two games during their MVP seasons. Don’t forget, however, that McNair and then-Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning shared MVP honors that season.
Thurman Thomas of the Buffalo Bills (1991), Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers (2011), and Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens (2019) have all only missed one game. However, all three players missed Week 17 due to injury and had already accomplished enough in the previous 16 weeks to win the MVP Award, so their position is a little different.
Murray, like Allen (+200 at publication) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady (+300), has a shot to catch them, but the chances are stacked against him. The pun was intentional.
It’s time to consider Dak Prescott as a front-runner for the MVP Award.
Despite the fact that Allen is still the MVP favorite, keep an eye on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who is now ranked fourth at +800. In Week 10, the Mississippi State product threw for 2,341 yards, 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions on 70.3 percent of his attempts.
After missing the most of the 2020 season due to an ankle injury, Prescott is on track to pass for roughly 4,700 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The mere existence of that story may be enough to sway people in his favor when the time comes.
Prescott did, however, miss a Week 8 win against the Minnesota Vikings due to a calf issue, so he won’t have the whole 17-game schedule on his CV. The Cowboys, like the Cardinals, decided to rest Prescott and start backup Cooper Rush that night.
Welcome to the NFL, if none of this seems fair. Murray, who grew up in Texas, has a chance to prove us wrong in Week 17 when he and the Cardinals face the Cowboys.
