Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson are two of the best players in NBA history, combining for 11 NBA championships, nine NBA Finals MVP titles and eight NBA regular season MVP titles. The duo also has 26 NBA All-Star Game appearances, five NBA All-Star Game MVP awards, 21 All-NBA Game appearances and won a gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona as part of the famed Dream Team.

But you probably already know that both MJ’s knew how to play basketball.

What you may not know (or remember) is that each of them once had their own television show: Jordan in the late ’80s and Magic in the late ’90s.

Michael Jordan hosted a TV show called Airin the late 1980s.

.

In 1989, Jordan, then 26 years old and still clinging to his remaining hair, presented a television show called Michael Jordan’s Airwaves , airing only in the Chicago area on ABC 7 (WLS-TV). Sportscaster Jim Rose, who started working at WLS-TV in 1982 and remarkably still works there, could be seen talking to Rose and Jordan in front of a studio audience, which is just crazy considering how much Jordan loves his private life.

It is currently unknown how many episodes of Michael Jordan’s Airwaves have aired, but a full episode can be seen above. And seriously, if you have time to see it in its entirety, do yourself a favor and do it, because this is the kind of MJ you’ve never seen. But if you don’t know, here’s a brief overview.

A few minutes later Phil Jackson, preparing for his first season as head coach of the Chicago Bulls, appears to talk about the 1989-90 season, which Jordan later does himself, saying that the Bulls could go all the way to the top, which they almost did that year, losing to the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals (the famous loss would follow the following year).

Then there’s a question-and-answer session that gets embarrassing when Jordan shamelessly advertises his Air Jordan sneakers while answering a question about golf, but he’s saved by a cute little girl who asks him why he likes basketball so much. There’s a short clip about B.J. Armstrong and Stacy King, who joined the Bulls as rookies at the time, and the show ends with a clip of Jordan bowling. Yes, you read that right.

The hairstyles (or lack thereof), fashions and audiences are typical of the 80s, and it’s absolutely horrifying in the most wonderful way.

Magic Johnson led the Magic Hour for eight weeks in 1998

.

Just over two years after his last game with the Los Angeles Lakers, Magic Johnson became the host of a talk show called The Magic Hour, which aired in June 1998, the same month Jordan played his last game with the Bulls.

Shortly after the show began, he faced criticism: Johnson was too nervous and too complimentary about his guests, he said. They also noted that he was incompatible with his sidekick, comedian Craig Shoemaker, who was demoted after only three episodes and replaced by Steve White, another comedian who has starred in five Spike Lee films.

When that relationship didn’t work out, White was replaced by Tommy Davidson, a former member of In Living Color . Oh yeah, we can’t help but mention that legendary percussionist and singer Sheila E. was the show’s conductor and musical director.

Initially, the show’s ratings were absolutely terrible, and then, in early July 1998, Magic invited Howard Stern, who was highly critical of Johnson as a talk show host and of the show in general, to be his guest. The interview was very embarrassing and, although Stern’s performance briefly boosted ratings, The Magic Hour was cancelled after about eight weeks.

Speaking of which, we can remind everyone of the weird places we’ve seen Jordan and Johnson in the past, as they both starred in a Michael Jackson video in the early 90s.

Jordan played a much bigger role in his appearance, as he appeared in the video for the song Jam, which also featured Heavy D and Kris Kross. Seriously, can you find any more 90s than that? Filmed in a warehouse in Chicago, the video shows Jordan trying to teach Jackson how to play basketball and Jackson trying to teach Jordan how to dance. Pure gold with two of the greatest icons in the history of the world.

.

As for Magic, he had a much smaller role when he appeared in the video for Jackson’s Remember the Time, in which Johnson played the protector of an Egyptian pharaoh, played by Eddie Murphy. The clip also features model Iman and the late Tommy Tiny Lister, who played Deebo in Friday and also played Zeus alongside Hulk Hogan in No Holds Barred, a character he later introduced to WWE. Again, it’s a pure 80s and 90s game.

.

That’s it. If you ever get into a conversation with Michael Jordan and/or Magic Johnson, throw out a few of these random nuggets to impress your friends.
