As most avid sports fans already know, the Detroit Pistons have one of the most storied histories in history of sport, winning 8 championships, with their most recent championship coming in 2004. As a result, it stands to reason that the Pistons deserve some credit for the recent success of the Milwaukee Bucks.
When the Detroit Pistons’ Bad Boy era came to a close, the Pistons were able to move on without much fanfare. With a new owner in the fold and a new face of the franchise in Ben Gordon and Richard Hamilton, Detroit had a new chance to make a playoff run. However, the Pistons have had their share of issues this season. They have been unable to reach the postseason, and they have one of the worst records in the league.
Like all of us, the Milwaukee Bucks owe some of their success to the Bad Boy Detroit Pistons. Joe Dumars was a Hall of Fame player and longtime president of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons. He was never associated with the Milwaukee Bucks. John Hammond left the Bucks in 2017 after a nine-year tenure as general manager. But now, as Milwaukee prepares for its first NBA Finals in 47 years, the Bad Boy Pistons’ imprint is visible in the team’s two stars.Building a team capable of winning a championship is still more of an art than a science, despite the development of advanced analytics and the increasing number of players being tracked. Dumars was part of two championship teams in Detroit, but he might have been the sweetest kid ever. He went on to build a championship club for the Pistons in 2004. Hammond was Dumars’ right-hand man in Detroit for six years before becoming general manager in Milwaukee.
To understand how the two franchises are connected, you have to look at the Bucks’ lineup for 2020-21.

The 2013 NBA draft was one of the most memorable. Except it’s not necessarily a book for the whole family. Instead, this title is in the horror section, at least for the teams at the top of the draft. The Cleveland Cavaliers started the night with Anthony Bennett. Woof. The other participants in the draw were Cody Zeller, Alex Len, Ben McLemore, Nerlens Noel and Shabazz Muhammad.
The highest player value above replacement value among all players in the 2013 draft was a player taken 15th. You may know Giannis Antitokounmpo as the two-time NBA MVP and centerpiece of the Milwaukee Bucks team.
It’s easy to look back on that selection eight years later and wonder how nearly half of the general managers managed to avoid Antetokounmpo. It’s certainly fun to review history, but of the six draft picks remaining from when Antitokounmpo was selected, the highest number is 19. He also appeared in issues 21, 22, 29 (twice) and nowhere else. So anyone who claims to have seen Giannis as he is now is lying a lot. Period.
Later in the season, the second unit was transferred to the Bucks in a sign-and-trade deal. Spoiler alert: He wasn’t the most high-profile player in the deal.

In late July 2013, the Detroit Pistons and the Milwaukee Bucks reached a signing and trade agreement that brought top scorer Brandon Jennings to the Pistons. The Bucs allegedly contracted Jennings and then traded him to Detroit for a package that included Brandon Knight. Dumars added Vyacheslav Kravtsov and Chris Middleton to help with payroll.
Knight was a former lottery pick who started his first two seasons for the Pistons. Aside from a poor decision to challenge DeAndre Jordan on the dunk, he started the game with confidence. Kravtsov was an unrestricted free agent from Ukraine, a clean pick at 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds.
Middleton arrived in Detroit as a second-round pick in 2012. He entered the draft after suffering a knee injury while still a student at Texas A&M University, and his stock dropped as a result. He played 27 games for the Pistons as a rookie and three games with the G-League team Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
Where the bad guys come in

The Detroit Pistons of the 1980s were a great team that played somewhere in the gray area between physical and criminal. Although the Pistons had a number of high-level stars on the team, there were also a lot of grinders on the roster. Isaiah Thomas was elected second in 1981. Vinny Johnson was selected in the top 10, with Mark Aguirre taking the spot ahead of Thomas.
But Dumars was picked at the end of the first round. Dennis Rodman was picked in the second round, Bill Lymbir was taken in the third round and played in Italy before getting his chance in the NBA. The lesson Dumars has learned is to look for key talent in unexpected places. Middleton was one of those players. He was available at No. 39 in 2012, and Dumars seized the opportunity with both hands.
Meanwhile, Dumars prepared Hammond with the same philosophy in mind. This allowed Hammond to see the 6ft 3in, skinny lad, who had never played above Division II in Greece, as a potential future star. The fact that he grew two inches and gained about 50 pounds didn’t get in the way of the process, but Hammond was the one who wanted to roll the dice.
The Bucks have done a good job of surrounding Middleton and Antetokounmpo with the details they need to be competitive. But the foundation has a Detroit twist.
