With the NBA trade deadline nearing on February 10, the Portland Trail Blazers fired the opening shot, although indications suggest they’re still open to deals. The New York Knicks are allegedly interested in acquiring guard CJ McCollum, one of Portland’s former centerpieces. The Knicks are one of the league’s worst shooting teams, and the 30-year-old might breathe new life into their offense.
Interim Trail Blazers GM Joe Cronin basically posted the “no reasonable offer denied” sign after trading Norman Powell and Robert Covington to the Los Angeles Clippers. On the offensive end, the New York Knicks have had a peculiar season. Despite being 12th in the NBA in three-point shooting (35.5%), the Knicks are 27th overall with a 43.6 percent shooting percentage.
Because they’re one of just four teams in the league to make fewer than half of their two-point attempts. Only the Toronto Raptors (49.3 percent), the Oklahoma City Thunder (49.3 percent), and the Detroit Pistons are ahead of them in the NBA with 49.7 percent (48.6 percent ).
None of their wings are very adept at completing twos. Evan Fournier leads the rotation regulars with 46.9% of the vote. RJ Barrett (45.4%), Kemba Walker (44.4%), Immanuel Quickley (41.7%), and Alec Burks (41.7%) round out the top five (36.5 percent ). Derrick Rose hit 46.7 percent of his deuces before suffering an ankle injury in December.
New York ranks 24th in the league in true shooting percentage (54.7%), thanks to a slightly above-average performance from outside the arc.
Even if CJ McCollum isn’t the whole solution, he’d be a step forward in a poor year.

The New York Knicks have joined the New Orleans Pelicans in their pursuit of Portland shooting guard CJ McCollum, according to Marc Stein of Substack.
With a collapsed lung, McCollum missed 18 games in December and January. He’s averaging 20.5 points per game in 35.2 minutes a game, shooting 47.6% inside the arc and 38.4% on 8.0 shots outside it.
The ninth-year veteran is taking more shots per game than anybody else on the Knicks’ roster, at 18.5 per night. Julius Randle, who is mired in controversy, shoots 16.3 times a game, shooting 46.9% from two-point range and a dismal 30.6 percent on 5.3 deep tries per game.
McCollum made 50.9 percent and 40.2 percent of his shots last season. He’s a hybrid guard who can help with playmaking more than Fournier, who mostly receives rather than sends passes.
CJ McCollum is in the first year of a nine-figure deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.

With the deal of Eric Bledsoe, Keon Johnson, and Justise Winslow to the Clippers, the Trail Blazers were able to achieve something. By relocating Powell and Covington, Portland was able to reduce its salary below the luxury tax threshold. A play-in position is as good as it gets for the Blazers, who are 21ā33 and 11th in the West. So, what’s the point of writing a huge check?
The New York Knicks aren’t in the same predicament. They have approximately $16.8 million in wiggle space under the tax threshold while being $7.4 million above the wage ceiling.
When it comes to adding CJ McCollum, who has a cap number of $30.9 million in the first season of a three-year, $100 million agreement inked in July 2019, that’s critical. He still has two seasons for $69.1 million on his contract after this year.
That’s when Fournier enters the picture. He inked a four-year, $73 million contract as an unrestricted free agent last summer. In 2024ā25, a $19 million team option is included.
According to FanSpo, sending Fournier out to fetch McCollum isn’t going to work. In this scenario, the Knicks will contribute $17.1 million and get $30.8 million. To fulfill the collective bargaining agreement’s criteria, they’ll need to add another $8.7 million to the transaction.
The move is made possible by the addition of Walker, who earns $8.7 million this season and is guaranteed $9.2 million next season.
This hypothetical arrangement also saves Portland $4.9 million in capital expenditures and does not jeopardize New York’s tax status. The Knicks would be $11.9 million over the salary cap.
The Knicks are disappointed after a surprising top-four finish in the East last season. CJ McCollum may be enough to put them back in the mix for a playoff berth. They are a game behind the Atlanta Hawks for 10th place with a record of 24ā29. New York is five games behind Toronto for sixth place.
The East is a blank canvas. It’s difficult to blame the New York Knicks for trying their luck at the trade deadline.
