After Jake Arrieta’s start against the Diamondbacks on April 29, the Padres franchise pitcher will soon be opening a new chapter in his career. After four solid seasons in Chicago, Arrieta is on the verge of changing his team for the better. The Cubs were rumored to be shopping Arrieta this summer, but instead of trading him, they decided to release him and even more surprisingly, re-sign him.

Pitchers have it tough in the baseball world. They get paid less than position players, but are subject to the most scrutiny. It is a very difficult position to play, and it can be even harder when you are playing for a team that is losing. Jake Arrieta is currently in this situation. He has been in the big leagues for about a decade, and is currently leading the San Diego Padres.

Recently, Jake Arrieta signed a $75 million dollar deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, which is the largest contract for a pitcher in MLB history. The reasons behind this massive deal are quite simple: Arrieta is one of the best pitchers in the major leagues, and will be worth the investment regardless of the outcome of his current contract. The reason for this is quite simple: he is worth it, and the Phillies are smart enough to know that.

Jake Arrieta, who is currently with the San Diego Padres, is not having a good season in 2021. His problems can be traced all the way back to when he initially signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018.

The Phillies executive management threw $75 million (over three years) at the right-hander to capture his services after a stellar few years with the Chicago Cubs. Arrieta’s first season with the Phillies wasn’t all that bad (3.96 ERA), but the two seasons after that were. He has a 4.64 ERA in 2019 and a 5.08 ERA in 2020, missing a lot of games each year due to injuries.

In the year 2021, the situation has only grown worse.

Jake Arrieta has deteriorated into one of baseball’s worst pitchers.

According to @TheAthletic, the Padres are close to signing Jake Arrieta. Expect a deal to be finalized shortly.

This past offseason, Arrieta returned to Chicago, most likely in search of a last sendoff with the club that helped him grow into a genuine ace on the mound. The veteran right-hander got off to a good start this season before soon revealing his real colors.

Arrieta has a 6.88 ERA and a 1.761 WHIP in 20 starts with the Cubs. These are by far his worst statistics in the Major Leagues, and he is presently ranked towards the bottom of all qualifying starting pitchers for the season.

That’s not good!

The Cubs are in the midst of a full-fledged tear-down rebuild, so releasing him only a few weeks after the trade deadline was no issue. Arrieta was signed by the Padres, a club that is attempting to win the World Series this season.

Jake Arrieta’s net worth is still massive.

Despite his poor performance over the last three years, Arrieta still has a sizable net worth. Given how much money the Phillies paid him, this isn’t surprising, but when compared to the value of other all-time greats in Major League Baseball, it’s still shocking.

Arrieta’s net worth is estimated to be about $20 million, according to and

When compared to all MLB players, both past and current, Arrieta’s net worth places him slightly outside the top 100.

The 97-100th most valued players in MLB history have a net worth of $35 million, according to (Russell Martin, Jhonny Peralta, Aaron Hill, Shane Victorino). Given how awful Arrieta has been on the mound lately, just being $15 million behind that mark is very remarkable. He isn’t receiving any more sponsorship agreements these days.

The Padres are in dire need of innings.

When the news of Arrieta’s contract was initially announced, many people wondered why the Padres were signing him. The simple explanation is that San Diego is starving for innings.

They’ve lost a number of starting pitchers to injury in recent weeks, and their top pitching prospect (Mackenzie Gore) isn’t looking very sharp right now. Forcing him to make his big league debut during a playoff run would be counterproductive.

The Padres missed out on Max Scherzer and Jose Berrios at the trade deadline, leaving them with little options in August. Arrieta is a seasoned veteran who has already pitched in the playoffs – he’s the best San Diego has to offer.

Arrieta will have one last chance to show he can pitch in the Major Leagues while also increasing the value of his net worth. For the 35-year-old, it’s a “win-win” scenario.
