Choosing his Ryder Cup golf partner in the final days of the Ryder Cup might not have been the most prudent decision that Patrick Reed made, but it was certainly the most abrupt.

A few years back, many people were predicting a “one-man team” in the Ryder Cup. A player who could win the tournament on his own. The best player who didn’t have to rely on the USMNT.

A few hours before the Ryder Cup, former U.S. Ryder Cup captain Curtis Strange was asked about the state of affairs, and his response was, “It’s a mess. It’s a mess. There’s no doubt about it. I’ve been in this position before, usually with a lead; I help build the team early.” Unfortunately for Strange, he is going to get the chance to do it again.. Athletes who played their way off teams due to poor performance are strewn throughout sports history. Patrick Reed, a member of the PGA Tour, is adopting a different approach. He may not be able to play himself out of the Ryder Cup.

As a result, Steve Stricker, the captain of the United States, is facing a possibly tough choice in the coming days.

Patrick Reed has withdrawn from the first round of the FedExCup Playoffs.

Reed withdrew from the FedExCup Playoffs’ first tournament two hours before his tee time on Thursday, according to the PGA Tour. Reed’s decision to leave The Northern Trust in Jersey City, New Jersey, was not explained in the statement. Reed, on the other hand, has been struggling with an ankle issue and pulled out of the Wyndham Championship last weekend.

The announcement is terrible news on top of bad news for Reed, the 2018 Masters Tournament winner, who is 31 years old. He has battled with four missed cuts since winning the Farmers Insurance Classic at the end of January, and a busy late-season schedule may have worn him out.

Reed played seven events in eight weeks, starting with the U.S. Open, when he tied for 19th after a final-round 67. Apart from the US Open, his greatest result during that time was a tie for 22nd place in the Tokyo Olympics. During that time, he has dropped eight places in the Official World Golf Ranking, to 17th.

The Ryder Cup has been thrown into disarray by Patrick Reed’s unexpected decision.

Daniel Berger, Patrick Cantlay, and Tony Finau are all within a point of Reed in the US Ryder Cup standings. After next week’s BMW Championship, the top six players in the rankings will automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup, which will be held at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin at the end of September.

Following the completion of the Tour Championship on Sept. 5, Captain Steve Stricker will add six more selections to the roster.

Reed, who has competed in the previous three Ryder Cups, is expected to place in the top 12 in points, but his destiny remains in the hands of Stricker. Early in the season, it was speculated that PGA Tour veteran Phil Mickelson would need some flashy performances and a decent ranking to earn a captain’s selection, and Lefty has checked off one of those boxes. He won the PGA Championship in May but is now ranked 19th in the points standings.

Webb Simpson, who is now ranked 13th in points, is also worth monitoring since he has competed in three of the last four Ryder Cups. In 2014, Tom Watson felt highly enough of Simpson to make him a captain’s selection.

If Stricker goes with Mickelson and/or Simpson, Reed will be one of the bubble candidates who may lose out.

Surprisingly, Bryson DeChambeau can assist.

Simpson’s chances of making the U.S. Ryder Cup squad are aided by the fact that the 2012 U.S. Open winner, who is only 36 years old, isn’t the sort to bring unneeded drama to the team locker room and living quarters. Reed, on the other hand, is a different story. His tournament activities have elicited criticism, or at the very least puzzled glances, from his colleagues.

Normally, Simpson’s pluses and Reed’s minuses wouldn’t matter much. The long-running rivalry between Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka, both of whom are certain of automatic spots, is expected to create all the intensity that an underdog squad can manage.

Stricker understands that he won’t be able to team DeChambeau and Koepka for the opening two days. In fact, DeChambeau may be the only player on the PGA Tour that PGA professionals dislike less than Reed, so there may be no volunteers to match them up.

What is Stricker’s potential? When Golf Digest looked forward to how the US team could come together, they came up with an intriguing theory: giving Reed a captain’s choice offers Stricker someone to pair up with DeChambeau. DeChambeau’s driver and Reed’s putter, in theory, are a formidable combination.

It could be a catastrophe if two men with chips on their shoulders and the capacity to annoy everyone within 50 yards get together. Should they take points off their opponents on Friday and Saturday, it may also be the foundation of an us-against-the-world (rather than simply Europe) attitude motivating their teammates in an unusual manner.
