Russell Westbrook has always been a man who is not afraid to help out his former teammates in need. After Paul George was traded to Houston, Russell was not only the first one to call him, but also the first to give him a helping hand.

Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant are one in the same when it comes to the basketball court. So, when it comes to Russell’s hard work, the NBA All-Star point guard demonstrated that he is nothing but an angel.

The NBA is a star-driven league, and the most sought-after stars are the ones that can take a team to the next level. The league’s Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) is given to the player who best embodies this in their play and character. Russell Westbrook was given the award in 2017, and was the second player in history to receive the award without having played a single game in the previous season.

Russell Westbrook, the incoming Los Angeles Lakers star, played only one season with the Washington Wizards. Despite this, he had a lasting impression on the D.C. culture, particularly on Washington Mystics starlet Elena Delle Donne.

Due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, Delle Donne has opted out of the 2020 season. She had surgery to fix a herniated disk in her back and has had to go through a long recovery procedure.

Westbrook displayed tenacity in assisting Delle Donne in staying the course.

Former NBA MVPs Russell Westbrook and Elena Delle Donne

Before they shared the same location, the Brodie and Delle Donne shared commonalities. Both were former MVPs in their respective leagues.

After putting together one of the most remarkable individual seasons in NBA history, Westbrook won the NBA MVP Award in 2016-17. He was the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double over the course of an entire season, and he also won the scoring title with 31.6 points per game.

Westbrook’s explosiveness and ability to impact the game in a variety of ways were on display throughout the season. He did it all with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and he’s still one of the league’s most efficient playmakers.

Delle Donne’s domination in the WNBA has been astounding to say the least. Six of her first seven seasons in the league saw her make the All-Star team, and she was named MVP in 2015 and 2019.

On both sides of the court, the Wilmington, Delaware native is unstoppable. That was never more clear than during her MVP campaign in 2015. Delle Donne had a 23.4 point, 8.4 rebound, 2.0 block, and 1.1 steals per game average.

Delle Donne is a big man with guard-like skill and shooting ability. She has a career three-point percentage of nearly 40%, making her the first WNBA player to reach the 50-40-90 mark in 2019.

As Delle Donne worked toward her return to the Mystics, Westbrook assisted her in her rehabilitation.

Russell Westbrook, according to Elena Delle Donne, was “one of her major helpers” during her injury recovery: “Russ would come in, far too early on game day, and rebound for me.”

Delle Donne’s journey back to the hardwood has not been simple.

The 31-year-back old’s problems put a damper on her comeback plans, and she even questioned if the cost of rehab would be worthwhile. Westbrook kept her motivated and provided her with extra inspiration when she needed it.

Westbrook was one of Delle Donne’s “greatest helpers” during her rehab, according to Delle Donne, who stated The Brodie would come to the Verizon Center early on game days simply to rebound for her. She also stated that the NBA player assisted her in breaking out of a “funk.”

Westbrook’s dedication has paid off. Delle Donne has returned to the Mystics’ practice room and is participating in full five-on-five drills. She is on the verge of returning to the courtroom, possibly by the end of the month.

For the Lakers, Westbrook must be the difference-maker.

Can Westbrook, who played a key role in Delle Donne’s recovery, do the same for the Lakers?

LeBron James and Anthony Davis continue to be the cornerstones of the Los Angeles Lakers organization. Still, Westbrook is the type of quick-twitch player who can help the Lakers open up the court and add firepower.

To relieve the load on James, the Lakers require a ball-handler and creator. Westbrook may be that player, as well as someone who can help LA move more smoothly.

On Tuesday, Westbrook will be introduced at a news conference. He’ll work with James and AD to return the Purple and Gold to the NBA’s top tier.

With his hometown team, the Los Angeles native will try to capture his first NBA championship. Even though the two stars are no longer in the same city, Delle Donne will most certainly be pulling for his success.

The NBA has a relatively poor track record when it comes to helping players overcome addiction. Just this week, the league suspended Danilo Gallinari for failing a drug test, and next week it will likely suspend Russell Westbrook for missing training camp after failing a drug test. In the history of the league, there have only been a few players who are able to overcome addiction and return to the court.
