Russell Westbrook allegedly got defensive when Lakers coaches singled him out in film sessions. It didn’t go over too well and the former MVP was reportedly made to sit on the bench for a few minutes during practice, according to ESPN’s Chris Haynes.

Russell Westbrook’s reported defensive reaction to Lakers coaches singling him out in film sessions is a common occurrence. Many players are known for their defensive reactions, but Russell Westbrook seems to be the most vocal about it. Read more in detail here: lakers trade rumors 2021.

Russell Westbrook Reportedly Gets Defensive When Lakers Coaches Single Him Out in Film Sessions

When the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards, they felt they were forming one of the finest Big Threes in NBA history, putting him with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Westbrook, on the other hand, has struggled with the purple and gold on both sides of the court, and many Lakers supporters want him transferred.

However, given Westbrook is getting $44.2 million this season and has a player option for next season at $47.1 million, it’s unlikely that any club would trade for him. The Lakers are likely stuck with the UCLA product, who is said to be sensitive to criticism.

When the Lakers’ coaches pick him out in film sessions, Westbrook becomes defensive, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne. He hasn’t been very effective on offense or defense this season, and Lakers head coach Frank Vogel benched him for the final minutes of the team’s 111-104 defeat to the Indiana Pacers, a decision that the coaching staff had mulled for some time.

Shelburne writes, “For weeks, the staff has discussed benching Westbrook at a time like this.” “Sources close to the team say they were always concerned about how he’d respond to such a transfer. Would he get defensive, as he frequently did when he felt singled out during filming sessions? Would it weaken his self-assurance, which is so crucial to his game? It was both understandable and astonishing when Vogel ultimately did it.”

The Lakers would be in the play-in tournament if the playoffs began today. Despite the fact that LeBron James is still putting up superstar numbers at the age of 37, it doesn’t look like Los Angeles will be able to turn things around until Westbrook somehow improves his game.

While the chances of that occurring are slim given the All-Star guard’s poor performance this season, not everyone on the Lakers is giving up on him.

Russell Westbrook is being patient with certain Lakers players.

According to Shelburne, several Lakers players are optimistic that Westbrook’s performance would improve after a rough start with the Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards. Because Westbrook is untradeable, they have little option but to remain positive.

Others inside the organization are more patient, citing Westbrook’s lengthy history of improving his game during the season as he adapts to new settings, as well as the fact that James, Davis, and Westbrook have only played 15 games together due to injuries,” Shelburne said. “It’s not like [Westbrook] is a tradable guy who can be traded if things don’t work out; everyone in the NBA knows that,” a club insider said. As a result, it has to function. This is your only choice. This season, there is no Plan B.”

Westbrook leads the Lakers with 18.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game while shooting 43.7 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from beyond the arc, and 67.3 percent from the line. He has a plus-minus of -70 and leads the NBA in turnovers. The Lakers won’t be successful no matter how good LeBron is if their starting point guard can’t shoot and gives the ball over at will.

It was clear after the first month of the season that the Lakers had made a mistake in acquiring Westbrook. Instead, Rob Pelinka should have dealt for Buddy Hield of the Sacramento Kings. If Hield had been selected over Westbrook, the Lakers would have advanced beyond the eighth spot.

Buddy Hield was not acquired by the Lakers, which was a mistake.

Hield is one of the league’s top shooters. With LeBron and Davis, he would have been a wonderful match. The Kings guard is shooting 38.1 percent from outside the arc this season, and he would have thrived with the Lakers since LeBron and Davis nearly always draw double teams in the post, allowing Hield to take uncontested shots.

With LeBron, Mike Miller and Ray Allen won championships. Because the King is one of the best passers of all time and usually collapses the paint on his drives to the basket, the sharpshooters profited from playing alongside him. Teams leave Westbrook wide open from beyond the arc, encouraging him to shoot and allowing the Lakers to maintain floor balance. Los Angeles would likely have a higher offensive rating if Hield played with LeBron and Davis. Currently, they are ranked 24th in the league.

Only time will tell whether Westbrook improves as a Lakers player. Don’t get your expectations up if you expect him to change into a shooter overnight and quit turning the ball over.
