Christmas is right around the corner and one NBA player knows exactly what he wants under his tree. Stephen Curry, who had a career-best season this year with 30 points per game, hopes to break his own record of 272 three pointers during the upcoming holiday period by scoring more than 300.

Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors was 142 3-pointers shy of matching Ray Allen’s record of 2,973 at the start of the season. Curry’s threat to Allen’s record isn’t surprising, but the speed with which he’s arrived is astonishing. Curry is in the front of an NBA revolution, with 3-pointers flying at an all-time high.
No one can match Curry’s loudness when he slams three balls down. No player has led the NBA in long bombs more than Curry, who has led the league seven times since the NBA established the 3-point line in 1979. Allen and James Harden, the next two players on the list, both achieved it three times. Curry also holds the single-season record with 402 triples in 2015–16, as well as third, fourth, sixth, and seventh places on the list.
The 400 3-pointer club has just one member: Stephen Curry.
Harden shattered Stephen Curry’s record for 3-point attempts in a season in 2018–19, becoming the first player in NBA history to make over 1,000 tries from beyond the arc in a single season (1,028). Despite surpassing Curry’s previous total by 142, he fell short of Steph’s record of 402 makes, ending with 378.
Curry has never made less than 2.1 three-pointers a game in his career, averaging 3.9 per night. Curry is 7th all-time with a 43.2 percent 3-point shooting, despite never leading the league in that category. This season, he leads the league with 34 makes on 91 attempts, a subpar (for him) 37.4 percent rate.
This statistic reflects the increasing rate of 3-point tries the best. Reggie Miller, a Hall of Famer, was one of the finest long-range shooters of his time. Miller retired in 2005 with a career high of 2,560 3-pointers, which he held until Allen surpassed him. Miller only made eight three-pointers in a game twice in his 1,389 career games. Curry has 62 such contests under his belt. It’s true that times have changed.
In 1996-97, the final of three seasons in which the NBA extended the line to a standard 22 feet all the way around, Miller achieved career highs for makes and attempts. He was number 229 out of 536. Curry often exceeds those marks long before the All-Star break.
Curry won’t quite match Allen’s mark in half the time, but he’ll get close.

Allen last appeared in the NBA in 2013–14, during which time he hit 2,973 3-pointers in 1,300 games. To overtake Allen, Stephen Curry will need another 107 points.
Curry would shatter the record on Dec. 17 against the Boston Celtics if he maintains his current rate of 4.9 makes per game. That is contingent on good health and enough rest. Curry will surpass Allen’s record in his 791st career game, accounting for a little more than 60% of Allen’s total.
It’s on the same level of statistical lunacy as Wayne Gretzky shattering Gordie Howe’s NHL scoring records. Over the course of 26 seasons, Howe scored 801 goals and 1,850 points in 1,767 NHL games. Gretzky scored 894 goals and 2,857 points in 1,487 games over the course of 20 seasons.
Curry will overtake Allen on the all-time list assuming he doesn’t suffer an injury that ends his career. Following that, the thrill will be in seeing how far Steph can push the record.
Curry will be 34 in March, so he’s getting close to the end. Early in his career, he battled ankle issues and has missed double-digit games in three of the previous four seasons.
But he’s still a great scorer, and his jumper is likely to stay pure as long as he wants to keep shooting it. Curry could easily reach the 4,000-point barrier in four or five more seasons if he stays healthy.

The NBA’s 3-point shooting has been redefined by Stephen Curry, but the rest of the league has followed suit. Buddy Hield of the Sacramento Kings has 1,187 3-pointers in seven seasons. He made his NBA debut less than two months before his 24th birthday, although he was a late starter.
While it’s tempting to look at Curry’s 3-point shooting rate and infer that any record he sets will be unassailable, the game in the modern age centers on the long ball. The 3-point line has become a source of income for centers. Stretch 4s are always in high demand. It’s almost a need for wings to have the deep ball in their repertoire if they want to be successful.
Stephen Curry is on his way to become the NBA’s 3-point champion. However, considering the present condition of the game, it’s reasonable to wonder how long he’ll have the title.
