In my opinion, there have been many NFL draft picks who have absolutely not lived up to their initial draft position. However, I believe there are many more who have. Why do I think this? It’s quite simple: draft picks are not made in a vacuum. They are made from the scouting department. The scouting department has to find players who have shown they are worthy of being drafted at a certain place and time.

One method NFL clubs get players fresh out of college is via the yearly draft. In a league with less trade and free agency movement than other major sports leagues, selecting the proper players is critical. Many draft choices have been failures throughout the years, failing to live up to their promise in the NFL. On the other hand, the greatest NFL draft choices have outperformed expectations and proven critics wrong, producing underdog stories that carry on long after the players have retired.
The greatest NFL draft selections of all time
Although CBS Sports has compiled a list of the greatest NFL draft choices, this is a very subjective issue on which not everyone agrees. Here are the top five:
Tom Brady is number one.
It’s difficult not to consider Tom Brady the greatest draft choice of all time – perhaps in any sport. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, and he has since gone on to become the best quarterback in football history. With the Patriots, he won six Super Bowls before winning a seventh with the Buccaneers last season at the age of 44.
Joe Montana is number two.
Joe Montana was selected 82nd overall in the 1979 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He went on to play for them for 13 seasons, winning four Super Bowls in the process. Montana, regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, was selected in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers.
Peyton Manning, No. 3
Peyton Manning was the No. 1 overall selection in the 1998 draft by the Indianapolis Colts, so he wasn’t a value pick like Brady or Montana, but his numbers speak for themselves. In key passing statistics such as completions, yards, and touchdowns, he is in the top five. Manning’s talent and numbers make him one of the greatest NFL draft choices, despite only winning two Super Bowls.
Roger Staubach, No. 4
Roger Staubach was selected by the Cowboys in the 10th round of the 1964 NFL Draft, a draft round that no longer exists. During his 11-year tenure with the Cowboys, he guided them to five Super Bowl trips, including two victories.
Emmitt Smith (#5)
Emmitt Smith, another long-time Cowboy, was the 17th overall selection in 1990 and was a key part of the Cowboys’ dynasty in the 1990s, when they won three Super Bowls. Smith went on to become the all-time leader in running yards and touchdowns in the NFL.
Which NFL draft was the greatest of all time?
Eric Dickerson is presented between Rams owner Georgia Frontiere and coach John Robinson soon after the 1983 NFL Draft | Bettmann/Contributor
When it comes to the greatest NFL draft class in history, 1983 is usually near the top of the list. Eight players from that year’s draft have gone on to become Hall of Famers, while the event also produced 42 Pro Bowlers. With quarterbacks John Elway, Jim Kelly, and Dan Marino all selected in the first round, this is a great class.
Despite the fact that Elway is the only one who has won a Super Bowl, all three had outstanding careers as quarterbacks. Eric Dickerson, who is still in the top 10 in career running yards almost 30 years after retiring, and Bruce Matthews, who is rated third all-time in games played and has been in 14 Pro Bowls, were among the other Hall of Famers inducted in 1983.
Which college has the most NFL draft selections in the first round?
1. Crimson Tide of Alabama
When it comes to first-round draft selections, which college has the most? Alabama is, somewhat unsurprisingly, the answer. Prior to the 2020 draft, Alabama and Ohio State were deadlocked with 31 players, according to Sports Illustrated. That year, Alabama gained four more first-round picks, and six more this year.
Julio Jones and Mark Ingram, both of whom were chosen in the first round of the 2011 selection, as well as Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins’ No. 5 choice in 2021, are among the finest Alabama alums. The following are the other top five colleges in terms of first-round picks:
2. Buckeyes of Ohio State
A.J. Hawk, siblings Nick and Joey Bosa, and Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott are among the Buckeyes’ 35 first-round selections.
Miami Hurricanes, No. 3
In the first round of the draft, 32 players from Miami (FL) were chosen. Jim Kelly, Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp, Ray Lewis, and Ed Reed are among the many Hall of Famers on the list.
4. Seminoles of Florida State University
Throughout the years, 24 Florida State graduates have been selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Lawrence Timmons, Jalen Ramsey, and Antonio Cromartie are among the most successful picks.
5. Trojans of USC
In the first round of the draft, the Trojans had 24 players chosen. Clay Matthews III, Troy Polamalu, and Carson Palmer are among the players who will be familiar to NFL fans.
