The Boston Celtics have acquired Derrick White in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets. The move was designed to improve their depth at point guard and give them more flexibility on offense, as they now have three capable playmakers on the roster in Kyrie Irving, Jaylen Brown, and White.
The “boston celtics” is a legitimate threat to win the Eastern Conference after the Derrick White acquisition. The boston celtics acquired Derrick White in a trade with Dallas Mavericks. The Celtics are now looking like they will be a team that will compete for the Eastern Conference title this season.
Only a few months ago, the Boston Celtics’ discussion appeared to focus around the viability of keeping both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. The Celtics have gone 14-4 since January 10, making them one of the hottest teams in the NBA. Derrick White’s addition considerably improves their chances of winning the Eastern Conference.
White isn’t the most exciting player to switch clubs at the NBA trade deadline, and he doesn’t solve the Celtics’ need for perimeter shooting. He is, however, a capable shot creator and slasher who can assist Boston in increasing its offensive output. Perhaps more importantly, as part of a tenacious backcourt with Marcus Smart, she strengthens the team’s perimeter defense.
Without a doubt, the Celtics are gaining traction. The White deal might be the move that cements Boston’s standing as a contender.

Given the quantity of seasoned players they may have sought to deal, the Boston Celtics seemed to be one of the clubs with the keys to the NBA trade deadline for weeks. Instead, Boston shifted its focus.
The Celtics negotiated a deal with the San Antonio Spurs to get combo guard Derrick White. To get White to Boston, the Celtics surrendered Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, a 2022 protected first-round selection, and a 2028 pick exchange. On many levels, this is a fascinating decision.
As the Celtics sought to carve out minutes for Aaron Nesmith, Richardson always appeared like a trade possibility. He was, however, one of Boston’s top three-point shooters. Dealing him for White, a below-average three-point shooter (31.3 percent this season), changes the roster’s complexion.
White, on the other hand, provides the Celtics with more resources. As a slasher, he can provide continuous rim pressure and move effectively off the ball, which is important since Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown often run the show. White’s on-ball defense also makes him a stronger guard option than Dennis Schroder (who has since been dealt to the Houston Rockets) and Payton Pritchard.
Indeed, in his first two games with the Celtics, White wasted no time establishing his worth to the fans.
In Boston’s closing lineups, White flourishes.

In his first two games with the Celtics, Derrick White’s stat statistics are a mixed bag.
On Feb. 11, White scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting in a win over the Denver Nuggets before shooting only 4-of-14 in a win over the Atlanta Hawks on Feb. 13. White’s effect on the game, though, is not defined by his shooting efficiency.
Against the Nuggets, the 27-year-old got six rebounds. White also had four rebounds and five assists against the Hawks, with just one turnover. He also had a pair of steals and a block, finishing the game with a plus-minus of +12.
White’s compatibility with this Celtics club is further shown by the advanced analytics.
With a closing lineup of Marcus Smart, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Robert Williams, Boston has a ridiculous +42.7 net rating in 15 minutes. On the attacking end, the Celtics generate possibilities and on the defensive end, they keep opponents at bay. They only gave up 95 points against a Hawks club that was rated second in offensive rating.
On the surface, White’s purchase seemed to be one of the more under-the-radar deadline transactions. In actuality, his arrival elevates the Celtics to a legitimate Eastern Conference contender.

At eight games, the Celtics have the NBA’s longest winning streak. They are the Eastern Conference’s No. 6 seed, barely 4.5 games behind the No. 1 seed.
Boston has already gained significant ground. Is it possible for them to make up any more ground?
Since returning to the rotation on Jan. 23, Smart has played his best basketball of the season. He’s committed to developing into a real point guard who actively assists players like Brown and Tatum.
The Celtics’ two studs, in particular, continue to feed off one another. Tatum, in particular, has been a fantastic two-way player recently, even if his shooting efficiency hasn’t exactly kept up with his performance. More significantly, after a victory against the Brooklyn Nets on February 8, Brown said that the squad is not pleased.
The Celtics’ X-factor may be Derrick White. With his ability to create off the bounce and make plays in the painted area, he adds more diversity to Boston’s offense. Despite his troubles on the perimeter, he hit close to 35% of his three-pointers with the Spurs last season.
White’s position as a winning player for this Celtics club is determined by his first two games. Boston will be a dangerous club in the playoffs if he can improve as an outside shooter.
