The Green Bay Packers are facing a crucially important decision in their 2011 football season, but it has nothing to do with their quarterback. On Wednesday, the Packers will decide whether or not to exercise the fifth-year option on the rookie contract of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which would pay him a guaranteed $20 million in 2012.

Back in the 1960s, Tom Mix, the famed cowboy actor, was a part of the Green Bay Packers franchise. He was known as the “Gentleman Cowboy” and the “Blue Roan”, and it was said that he “played with his heart, not his head.” In 1969, after a very successful run on the field, he retired and passed away from lung cancer. He was only 47 years old.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be a free agent at the end of the 2019 season when his current six-year, $134 million contract expires. In the wake of the NFL’s new TV deal, the Packers will be in a position to make a decision about Rodgers’ future that is perhaps more important than their decision to put Rodgers’ current contract on the table.. Green Bay is all about Aaron Rodgers right now, and rightfully so. The reigning NFL MVP requested a trade earlier this season and has yet to be seen in Packers minicamp. It’s safe to say the No. 12 situation has big implications for general manager Brian Gutekunst.

However, the Packers also have a big decision to make about their second-best star, for a $25 million fee: Davante Adams.

Adams is expected to get a new contract soon, as his current contract expires after the 2021-22 season. If Green Bay can’t get a contract extension in the next few months, the franchise could lose Rodgers and Adams in the same season.

It would be a disaster for all cheese eaters.

Packers need Aaron Rodgers back

It’s not often that a star quarterback, still in his prime, wins the MVP award, wins his conference championship in the same season, and then announces a strike a few months later. But that’s exactly what we have with Rodgers in Green Bay.

After one of the best seasons of his career, Rodgers decided he didn’t want to be a Packers player anymore. He asked to be transferred at the beginning of the year and didn’t show up at team events during the offseason. It has become a long, drawn-out staring contest between Rogers and Gutekunst, and no one is flinching.

It’s just a kind of philosophy and maybe we forget that it’s the people who make it all possible. It’s a matter of character. It’s a matter of culture. The key is to do it right, Rodgers told Kenny Mayne last month on ESPN’s SportsCenter . Much of this work began last year. The key was thrown to him when I became MVP and played like last year. It’s just kind of an overflow of all that. But it’s about people, and that’s the important thing. Green Bay has always been a people business.

Rodgers has clearly had enough of the whole Packers organization and doesn’t seem to want to play for the team anymore. Gutekunst, team president Mark Murphy and the rest of the front office must get him back before the season begins.

It was the Packers’ first priority this summer, but it doesn’t look like they’ve made any progress.

Packers make fateful decision on Davante Adams for $25 million

Clearly, the Packers are primarily focused on getting Rodgers back, but there are 52 other players on the roster to worry about. None of these players are more important than Adams, who may be the best wide receiver in the NFL right now.

Adams is 28 years old and entering the final year of his four-year, $58 million contract. He should get a pay raise next season, and he’ll have 31 other candidates if he doesn’t want to stay in Green Bay.

Therefore, the Packers need to act quickly and get Adams on board before the 2021 season begins. Expected price for a new contract extension? In total, about $25 million, according to Spotrac.

Spotrac estimates Adams’ current market value at $24.9 million, which would make him the second highest paid WR in the NFL. A four-year contract worth about $100 million is the asking price for the four-time Pro Bowler.

And given the uncertainty surrounding Rodgers’ return to Green Bay, the Packers will want to contract Adams as soon as possible. If Rodgers is sold or sits out the entire season hoping to join a new team in 2022, it is likely that Adams will not want to stay with the team after next season.

Cover difficult to crush

All the teams want to get as much leeway as possible, even the teams that already have big commitments. 6 teams already have commitments above the $200 million cap for 2022, via @Jason_OTC:

3. Rams: 212 MILLION
4. Saints: 208 MILLION

The Packers are under tremendous pressure to contract Adams this season, but it will only complicate their already undesirable free agency situation. Green Bay already has a $238 million capital commitment for 2022, the highest in the NFL right now.

Four players – Rodgers, Za’Darius Smith, David Bakhtiari and Kenny Clark – will have cap hits of more than $20 million next season. Adams would have made five.

The Packers are currently $29.9 million over the $208.2 million salary cap for 2022. Obviously, getting rid of Rodgers and his $39.8 million for next season would be the easiest decision, especially considering he doesn’t even want to be here.

But if they manage to keep Rodgers, it’s hard to imagine Adams getting the contract he deserves this summer.

The team is trying to figure out whether to spend $25 million to renovate or replace their Lambeau Field’s north end, where the scoreboard is located and the team’s Pro Shop is located, according to a report by The Associated Press. The Packers are one of four NFL teams that are in the very early stages of deciding where to build, renovate or rebuild new stadiums, according to the AP.
