I’ve gone through the top 10 picks of the first round and I’ve also gone through the second round and I’ve found some guys who I think are going to be really good.
The 2021 NBA Draft is getting some buzz as one of the deepest drafts in recent history, with a number of top prospects expected to be selected in the late first and early second round. While the early first round and the early second round are the most popular parts of the draft, there are a number of later picks that could provide a lot of value.
The 2021 NBA Draft’s second round has a lot of talent to watch. Zion Williamson’s Pelicans got a big one, and the Knicks still have a top-3 pick. That’s great, but there are some other teams with something to watch: the Boston Celtics, who need a point guard and a big man, the Lakers, who can’t draft Zion Williamson and the Jazz, who need a wing.
In the second round of NBA drafts, teams may find hidden gems. When the dust has cleared on the first round, major players and future Hall of Famers have been historically underestimated and snatched from relative obscurity. Second-round picks Khris Middleton, Draymond Green, and Manu Ginobili were all selected.
Most likely, we’ll be discussing one or more of those gems in the rough who were missed by clubs. Here are four from the class of 2021:
In Baylor’s Jared Butler, Zion Williamson has a new teammate.

Butler was anticipated to be a lottery selection, but the NBA’s doctors warned him about a heart issue. He couldn’t work out for clubs until two weeks before the draft, when he was finally approved.
Butler’s résumé, on the other hand, speaks for itself. Last year, as a 20-year-old, he was awarded the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player after guiding Baylor to a National Championship. On 41.6 percent three-point shooting, the 6-foot-2 guard scored 16 points per game. Out of the pick-and-roll, he has excellent enough handles and vision to be a playmaker.
His future seems to be as an offensive spark off the bench, which is highly sought after by NBA teams. In the second round, that archetype is a steal. From the start, Williamson should be enamored with Butler’s shooting and playmaking.
In West Virginia’s Miles McBride, the New York Knicks found a Tom Thibodeau favorite.
The Knicks traded out of their first three draft picks in 2021 before relocating to No. 36 and selecting Miles McBride. McBride is a West Virginia point guard renowned for his defense, effort, and grit. To put it another way, these are the qualities that make Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau salivate.
Last season with the Mountaineers, McBride averaged 15.9 points and hit more than 41% from three, but he won’t be hunting his own shots. He’s perfectly content to be a selfless playmaker and a nuisance on defense. Which may come in handy as the year progresses.
The San Antonio Spurs bounced back from a shocking first-round loss by drafting Iowa’s Joe Wieskamp in the second round.
The pick of Alabama freshman Josh Primo at No. 12 by San Antonio sent the NBA basketball world into a frenzy. However, in the second round, they added Joe Wieskamp, who should be a valuable contributor. In college, Wieskamp was a solid performer for the Hawkeyes. Wieskamp, who is known as a shooter, hit 46 percent from outside the arc for the Hawkeyes last season.
Then he had a meltdown at the NBA combine. Wieskamp ran a 42-inch max vertical, which was the second-highest at the combine, according to 247Sports. Wieskamp is also 6-foot-7 with a 6-11 wingspan, indicating that he has the potential to be more than simply a shooter. Although, in the combine, he shot 8 of 13 from three and scored 34 points in two games, demonstrating that he can also score.
Jeremiah Robinson-Earl of Villanova is traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder for a No. 32 pick.
Another draft, another Villanova sleeper candidate. In recent seasons, the Wildcats have produced a slew of NBA role players. According to RealGM, Josh Hart, Donte DiVincenzo, Jalen Brunson, Eric Paschall, Mikal Bridges, and Saddiq Bey have all been selected since 2016. Since their entry into the league, all six have been starters or rotation players, with Robinson-Earl looking to be the most recent.
Last season, Robinson-Earl was named co-Big East Player of the Year as a sophomore, and his game has a Draymond-Green feel to it. He’s intelligent, versatile, and tough, and at 6-9, 230 pounds, he can defend several spots. Robinson-greatest Earl’s flaw coming out of college, like Green’s, was his shooting.
There’s a reason why players are eliminated in the second round. Their games have obvious faults; they’re outdated, or they lack top-end physical characteristics. Butler, McBride, Wieskamp, and Robinson-Earl, on the other hand, all offer a unique combination of talents to the NBA, which is why they were selected. Despite being missed in the 2021 selection, all four have a chance to carve out successful careers.
