Following last season’s disaster, it looked like the Boston Celtics’ only option was to move up. The squad underachieved during the 2021-21 season, finishing with a 36-36 record despite having two All-Stars on the roster in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Things have only grown worse, and after the Celtics lost a 19-point third-quarter lead at home, Marcus Smart finally vented his anger.

The Celtics are 2-5 after seven games. They haven’t won in front of their own fans, but that seemed to be changing Monday night. Instead, the Bulls outscored the Celtics 39-11 in the last 12 minutes, turning a 19-point advantage late in the third quarter into a 128-114 defeat.
During their early seven-game span, the Celtics’ effort has been questioned. Even Tatum, a two-time All-Star and the team’s ostensible captain, confessed the team’s energy was lacking after their 0-2 start at home against the Toronto Raptors.
According to Mass Live, Tatum said, “We know why we lost.” “They simply played tougher and harder than we did.” It wasn’t a difficult task. We’re all experts in our fields. We’re all grown-ups now. We were able to comprehend what had occurred.”
When your team’s so-called leader confesses effort was an issue two games into the season and playing in front of your home crowd for the first time, it’s a worrying remark.
Smart has never had an issue putting out effort. He may irritate Boston fans with his relentless outside shooting, but he shows up every game to play. He may not be as prolific a scorer as Tatum and Brown, but he leaves everything on the court. Maybe that’s why, after Monday’s game, he let it all out.

The Celtics led 94-75 with 2:53 remaining in the third quarter. The Bulls outscored them 53-20 after that. It was a dreadful conclusion to one of their season’s many dreadful defeats. Smart went to the media to air his grievances, letting it all hang out and naming Tatum and Brown.
He added after the game, “Every team knows we’re trying to get to Jayson and Jaylen.” “To stop Jayson and Jaylen, every squad has been prepared and researched. Everyone’s scouting report, I believe, is to make those guys pass the ball. They are adamant about not passing the ball.
“That’s something they’re going to pick up on.” They’re still figuring things out. We’re happy of their growth, but they’ll need to take it a step further and find methods to not just create for themselves, but also for others on the team to help them open up the court later in the game.”
Smart also criticized the Celtics’ offensive strategy.
According to CLNS Media, Smart remarked, “There’s just so much I can do without the ball in my hands and simply stand in the corner.” “Every team knows we’re running plays for our top guys.” They do an excellent job of shutting off that system. We won’t be able to get to those folks if they shut it off.
“Like I said, there’s only so much I can do standing in the corner for myself.”
In his evaluation of the Celtics, Smart is correct.
Smart may have gone about it the wrong way by publicly criticizing his colleagues, but at the very least he is attempting to effect change. The Celtics need to do something, and Tatum has yet to demonstrate that he can lead. Tatum recognized the issue in Game 2, but it has persisted all the way until Game 7.
Smart has a good heart. He doesn’t have the offensive prowess of Tatum or Brown, but he’s a dedicated player who never fails to put in 100% effort on the field.
The Celtics aren’t what they seem to be. They’re a stronger squad than they were a year ago, but without a change in leadership, they’re doomed. This season, Tatum isn’t even shooting 40% from the field. His three-point shooting is a pitiful 27%. The shooting will very certainly occur, but the effort and leadership are woefully missing.
Smart’s remarks to reporters after yet another embarrassing defeat may irritate Tatum, Brown, and new coach Ime Udoka, but they might provide the spark the Celtics urgently need.
