The Giants were never really horrible, even when they were middling in the midst of Cruz’s tenure. Even though they finished 19-29 in three seasons from 2013 to 2015, they were still miles ahead of teams like the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Right now, it isn’t even close to being the case. Since the start of the 2017 season, the Giants have gone a league-worst 19-51, and things aren’t looking up. Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, and Aaron Judge have all failed to change the culture and transform the four-time Super Bowl winners into real playoff contenders.
Cruz told the New York Post that he admires Judge and feels he is the appropriate person for the position in a recent interview. Never mind that the Giants had a shaky offense and a weak defense heading into Week 6.
“He’s a straight shooter who holds these individuals responsible for whatever they do,” says the narrator. And I think they rally behind that, and I think the team is reflecting that personality in that side of him, and I believe it’ll only benefit them in the long term… “All they have to do now is stay the course,” says the narrator.

Cruz was a Cowboys fan in his early years, despite growing up in New Jersey. He was born in 1986, just as the dynasty was coming to an end, and he saw America’s Team devolve into a poor and unappealing club.
Cruz’s situation is familiar to Giants fans born in 1996. At the very least, a 25-year-old has seen two Super Bowl triumphs against the New England Patriots. In their tenure as a football fan, a 15-year-old is unlikely to have seen the Giants play in a single playoff game.
There’s no reason to expect that will change now that Judge is in charge. In his two seasons as head coach, the Giants have gone 7-15 and have been outscored 534-390. The offense of offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has been, well, offensive.
Cruz said that the squad had rallied behind Judge, despite the fact that a five-minute look at their games would suggest otherwise. Last year, his straight-shooting style landed him in a disagreement with former offensive line coach Marc Colombo, and he was chastised by Kelvin Benjamin, who spent part of this summer with the Giants.
We understand Cruz’s want to be upbeat about his club, but reserve your optimism for quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley. Don’t spend your time on a head coach who is on the verge of losing his job at the conclusion of the season.
The present Giants are a far cry from what Cruz seen and experienced.
In Week 3, the Giants honored former quarterback Eli Manning by retiring his No. 10 before halftime. Later that afternoon, fans exited MetLife Stadium after seeing a heartbreaking last-second defeat to Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons.
That would have been significantly superior than what occurred in Week 6. In a 38-11 triumph, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford ripped through the Giants’ defense for four touchdowns. By surrendering 28 unanswered points in the second quarter, New York did pass rusher Justin Tuck and the defenders from that 2011 squad proud.
Giants supporters may at least rest easy at night knowing they won’t be the first team in NFL history to go 0-17. But, at 1-5, a sixth straight losing season looms for a once-proud organization — recall, with the additional game, teams can only accomplish a non-losing season if they finish 8-8-1 —
Cruz has his Super Bowl ring, his health, and his pension, at the very least. Those who play for the Giants in 2021 are forced to suffer, at least until the season finishes or the organization mercifully cuts them.
