Tim Tebow’s NFL career may be over, but the Florida Gators quarterback has one last chance to land a dream NFL job. After being on the receiving end of some harsh words from Urban Meyer, Tebow’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, told ESPN that the NFL quarterback will meet with the head coach at Florida’s pro day on March 20 to discuss his future.
Tim Tebow has been on the decline lately. He’s not playing well for the New England Patriots and the Jets, and he’s not making much of an impact for the Gators. He doesn’t appear to be the same player that he once was.
On Wednesday night, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer held his weekly press conference on Wednesday to discuss the Buckeyes’ game against Northwestern on Saturday. To many fans, that would have been the end of a week filled with questions about the Northwestern game. However, to others, Meyer’s comments were a significant topic of conversation, thanks to a couple of statements he made to the assembled media.. Or will the former Denver Broncos quarterback have to find another way to make a living?
While no one knows the answers to these questions at this point, Tebow’s appearance in training camp will go a long way toward clearing up any ambiguity about his future in professional football. But judging by Urban Meyer’s recent comments, Jacksonville Jaguars fans shouldn’t be too confident in the chances of Tebow ever making an impact on the franchise.
The next few months will determine if Tebow deserves to stay in the NFL. Of course, it’s been a while since he was paid to play football.
Tebow last played in the NFL for the New York Jets in 2012. He briefly played for the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, but eventually put his NFL career on hold to concentrate on professional baseball. But after spending the second half of the last decade in the minor leagues, Tebow officially retired from the game in February.
It’s no surprise that the former Florida Gators star was reunited with his head coach in college. After Meyer arrived in Jacksonville, Tebow had the opportunity to continue his career at a franchise that desperately needed a fresh start. His path to a spot on the Jaguars’ roster seems particularly difficult, however. After all, he needs to master this new position and prove that his 33-year-old body can handle the physical demands of a tight end position.
Given his inexperience as a pickup and blocker, and his absence from the NFL for nearly a decade, it seems unlikely, even for the fiery Tebow, that he will make the team. If he fails to impress in training camp and preseason games, his comeback story will likely have a sad ending.
Meyer understands Tebow better than most. They won two national championships together in Florida, and the veteran coach can attest to the tireless work ethic and leadership qualities of the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner. Even though Meyer has a close relationship with Tebow, he’s not going to just give him the job.
The Jacksonville head coach even expressed serious doubts about Tebow’s future after admitting how difficult it was to reduce the team’s final roster from 90 to 53 players.
For me, this is one of the 90. He’s a guy who, what’s the difference between him and the other 40 guys trying to make the team? Meyer told Mackenzie Salmon of USA Today Sports. It’s the same for me. It is their livelihood, it is their work, it is their way of making a living. And the reality is that a large percentage of your team will leave or be transferred here.
Not exactly a comforting statement if you’re Tebow, is it?
Meyer calls it one of the 90, which may not sound serious, but reflects reality. Tebow has zero experience as a tight end and has not impressed as a quarterback in his NFL career thus far. As much as Meyer would like to make Tebow the Jaguars’ version of Tysom Hill, the question is whether the 34-year-old has the athleticism and skills to play a role as a runner, catcher and pitcher.
As much as Jacksonville wants the experiment to succeed, Tebow has to prove that he deserves a place on the roster more than the players who have actually played football the past eight years. But given the way Meyer has treated Tebow, and his comments about giving up much of the team, the future doesn’t look very bright for a guy buried at the bottom of the tight end depth chart.

Will Tebow take the stage with his shields? Or will he fail to live up to expectations this summer?
On the one hand, it’s hard to completely rule him out, given his ties to Meyer and his dedication to his craft. He’s clearly in good shape and wouldn’t be the first NFL signal caller to switch to tight end.
Logan Thomas emerged as the fourth-round pick for the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL in 2014. The 6-foot-2, 250-pounder showed interesting potential as a dual-threat quarterback in college, but ultimately turned down the opportunity to play the position at the professional level. Instead, Thomas moved to tight end in 2016, where he was able to fully utilize his unique athletic ability. He played part-time in Buffalo and Detroit, and last season on the Washington football team, he accounted for 72 catches for 670 yards and six touchdowns.
Unfortunately, Tebow can’t keep up with Thomas physically. He is 10 cm shorter and at least one or two steps slower. After all, Thomas ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine. Tebow ran 4.72, but he set that time more than a decade ago. Presumably, he lacks the top-end speed and athletic ability he had when he was picked first in 2010.
If Thomas continues to improve and play a significant role on the field, perhaps other teams will consider making athletic college quarterbacks tight ends.
But don’t expect Tebow to be the next success story.
