The 76ers introduced Ben Simmons to the NBA world in 2016; he was drafted with the first overall pick by his hometown team. James Harden is one of only four players in history to play at least nine seasons for three different teams and win an MVP award, but there are plenty who think that number should’ve gone to Simmons instead.

The 76ers have made a change to their uniforms for the 2018-2019 season. James Harden, who was wearing No. 13 before, is now wearing No. 6. Read more in detail here: james harden number sixers.

Why James Harden Isn't Wearing No. 13 With the 76ers

James Harden is expected to make his NBA debut after the All-Star break, according to the Philadelphia 76ers. But his new appearance is more than just sporting the Sixers’ red, white, and blue.

The Beard will not be wearing No. 13 for the first time in his career. While attending Artesia High School in Lakewood, California, he chose the number. He maintained it for two seasons at Arizona State, three seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, eight seasons with the Houston Rockets, and 13 months in Brooklyn.

The Sixers, on the other hand, do not have the number. That was ensured by a Philadelphia legend.

The Philadelphia 76ers’ James Harden was chosen first overall.

At the NBA trade deadline on February 10, the Philadelphia 76ers acquired James Harden and forward Paul Millsap in exchange for guard Seth Curry, center Andre Drummond, and three-time All-Star Ben Simmons. They also handed up two first-round selections, one of which was protected, as part of the transaction.

On ESPN’s NBA Today on Feb. 18, Adrian Wojnarowski said that the 76ers anticipate Harden to play against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Feb. 25. This will be the first game after the All-Star break. On March 2, the 2017–18 NBA MVP will make his home debut against the New York Knicks.

Harden hasn’t played since February 2 due to hamstring pain in his left leg. The Sixers aren’t taking any risks after the 32-year-old missed more than a month last season and was limited throughout the playoffs with a strained right hamstring.

When The Beard makes his debut, he’ll be wearing No. 1, which was Drummond’s before to the trade. Since 2012–13, at least one Sixer has worn the digit, a streak that started with Nick Young. It went on with Michael Carter-Williams, JaVale McGee, Glenn Robinson III, Ish Smith, Tony Wroten, T.J. McConnell, Justin Anderson, Landry Shamet, Mike Scott, and Drummond, the 2013–14 Rookie of the Year.

The number was also worn by five other Philadelphia players. In 1983–84, Wes Matthews (father of current Milwaukee Bucks player) was the first. The others are Scott Brooks, B.J. Tyler, Tim Thomas, and Samuel Dalembert.

But why couldn’t Harden have the thirteenth spot?

For the Philadelphia 76ers, Wilt Chamberlain hung No. 13 in the rafters.

While Wilt Chamberlain was not the final player to wear the No. 13 for the Philadelphia 76ers, he was without a doubt the finest. The Philadelphia native made his NBA debut with the Warriors when they were still based in Philadelphia, before moving to San Francisco in 1962.

Wilt came home in a blockbuster deal in January 1965.

Chamberlain only spent three seasons with the 76ers. He was, however, the NBA MVP in each of them. In 1967, the club won its first championship in Philadelphia. The Big Dipper averaged 27.6 points, 23.9 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game during 277 games. He was the first non-guard to lead the NBA in assists with 702 in 1967–68. (He finished with an 8.6 per game, behind Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson’s 9.7.)

After the Boston Celtics defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 7 of the Eastern Division Finals, Chamberlain requested out. On July 9, 1968, he was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he spent the next five seasons.

After Wilt’s departure, the team only awarded No. 13 once, to rookie guard Dave Wohl in 1971–72. According to NBA.com’s Jeff Case, the number remained out of circulation until March 18, 1991, when it was officially retired.

With a 35–23 record, the Philadelphia 76ers entered the All-Star break as the Eastern Conference’s third-best team. The Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls are 2.5 games behind, while the Cleveland Cavaliers are tied for third place.

On the basis of their 103–93 win against the Cavs on Feb. 12, the Sixers have the tiebreaker edge over the Cavs, but the clubs will encounter three more times. The Cavaliers return to Philadelphia on March 4, followed by visits from the 76ers on March 16 and April 3.

In 44 games with the Nets, James Harden averaged 22.5 points, 10.2 assists, and 8.0 rebounds in 37.0 minutes per game. His scoring average is the lowest it’s been since 2011–12, and his 47.6% two-point shooting percentage is the lowest it’s been since his rookie season.

He’s also shooting 33.2 percent from beyond the arc, which is a career low. On paper, The Beard seems to be the ideal pick-and-roll partner for MVP favorite Joel Embiid, but Harden’s track record with other superstars is shaky at best.

According to a tweet from The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Harden would exercise his $47.3 million option for next season. But Kyle Neubeck of the Philly Voice reported via Twitter that didn’t happen.

After 13 NBA seasons, seeing James Harden under a different jersey number will be strange. However, we’ll make the necessary adjustments. After all, LeBron James has alternated between No. 23 and No. 6 on many occasions.
