Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in football and a player who could make any team better. His skill set makes him especially valuable to NFL teams, but he has been without an employer since being released by the Green Bay Packers last season. One of his potential suitors for this offseason is Tennessee Titans, and now their own backup quarterback’s salary may be holding them back from landing Rodgers. Ryan Tannehill recently signed a three year extension with $29 million guaranteed that would allow him to outlast Aaron Rogers in waiting for his next job.,

The “aaron rodgers number” is a question that has been asked for a while. Aaron Rodgers and Ryan Tannehill are two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, so why would they be on different teams? The answer is simple: money.

Why Ryan Tannehill and $29 Million Stand in the Way of Aaron Rodgers Joining the Tennessee Titans

If the Green Bay Packers make Aaron Rodgers available for trade this summer, there will almost certainly be a slew of suitors. Given Ryan Tannehill’s problems, the Tennessee Titans are in desperate need of a quarterback improvement. However, for a deal to make financial sense, the Titans’ front office would have to work their magic.

Even so, it wouldn’t be unexpected to see Mike Vrabel and his team enter the race to sign the three-time NFL MVP.

The Tennessee Titans have been mentioned as a potential suitor for Aaron Rodgers.

Expect the offseason speculations to heat up even more now that the Green Bay Packers’ 2021 season is officially finished. Many people are speculating on which clubs would be interested in acquiring Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers. The Pittsburgh Steelers, the Denver Broncos, and the Las Vegas Raiders have all been mentioned. To that list, add the Tennessee Titans.

According to Jared Stillman of ESPN Nashville, Rodgers reportedly purchased land in Nashville, Tennessee, with plans to build a home. Stillman’s sources also advised that the Packers signal-caller would be “open” to the idea of joining the Titans.

Rodgers’ residence in Nashville does not guarantee that he will play for the Titans in 2022. He isn’t an unrestricted free agent. He wouldn’t be able to choose his destination since the Packers would have to consent to deal him. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t surprise me if Tennessee made a play for the 10-time Pro Bowler.

Even while a trade for Rodgers isn’t out of the question, general manager Jon Robinson and the front office may have their job cut out for them in terms of finances.

The costly contract of Ryan Tannehill might be a stumbling block.

Ryan Tannehill, the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, had a difficult season in 2021. He threw for 3,734 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions during the regular season. While it wasn’t his worst season, Tannehill regressed significantly from the previous year.

However, the ninth-year veteran is deserving of praise. In Week 8, superstar running back Derrick Henry injured his foot, and the offense wasn’t the same without him. Nonetheless, Tannehill’s game was exposed by Henry’s absence (accuracy, decision-making, etc.).

In the Titans’ Divisional Round defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals, the quarterback threw three interceptions in critical circumstances.

Tennessee has had success with Ryan Tannehill, but the chance to snag Aaron Rodgers may be too good to pass up. Tannehill’s contract, on the other hand, might be a stumbling block in the process.

The Texas A&M product is under contract through 2023. He will make $29 million in base salary in 2022, which is fully guaranteed. According to Pro Football Talk, if the Titans trade Tannehill before June 1, they will trigger a $28.4 million cap hit.

The team’s efforts to compensate Aaron Rodgers would be hampered if they took such a big blow.

Why the Packers’ quarterback may do well in Tennessee

Assume the Tennessee Titans can find a way to make the trade financially viable. Aaron Rodgers would then be entering a strong scenario in Nashville.

The Packers quarterback would be a major boost. Ryan Tannehill is a master of the play-action passing game, but he lacks some of the skills that Aaron Rodgers has on the football field.

The four-time All-Pro pick would have the option of passing the ball to Derrick Henry, the NFL’s finest running back. As Tannehill knows, having that bell cow relieves a lot of burden on Rodgers.

A.J. Brown, one of the league’s emerging wide receiver studs, is also a part of Tennessee’s offense. Julio Jones is also present. Due to injuries, the experienced wideout is no longer the player he once was. Aaron Rodgers, on the other hand, is the only quarterback who can maximize Jones’ output.

The Titans’ defense is headed by defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, outside linebacker Harold Landry, and safety Kevin Byard, who all rank in the top ten. It would be a formula for success to throw Rodgers into a mix that already contains a great run game and a muscular defense.

Ryan Tannehill’s huge deal, unfortunately for the Titans, might be a significant hurdle.

Pro Football Reference provided all numbers, while Spotrac provided contract statistics.
